Johann Baptist Reus SJ (Portuguese João Batista Reus ) (born July 10, 1868 in Pottenstein (Upper Franconia) ; † July 21, 1947 in São Leopoldo , Brazil ) was a German Jesuit , missionary and mystic of outstanding importance in the Sacred Heart Piety and theology .

Life

Johann Baptist Reus entered the Bamberger seminary, was ordained a deacon on 16 April 1892 and received the priestly ordination on 30 July 1893. On 16 October 1894 he entered Blyenbeck in the Netherlands in the novitiate one of the Jesuits. From 1896 to 1899 he studied philosophy and theology at the Ignatius College in Valkenburg . After completing the novitiate, he was sent to serve. Together with four other Jesuits, he came to Brazil on September 15, 1900, where he mostly served in Porto Alegre for the first few years . In 1913 he became pastor in Sao Leopoldo and the following year he became the spiritual director of the seminary there. From 1917 to 1944 he taught religion, geography, French and liturgy in the small and large seminary . From 1912 he had mystical experiences, such as visions and stigmata , about which he made notes in the diary and in his autobiography . He also wrote several books for his educational work at the seminary.

Father Reus died after a long illness on July 21, 1947. He is buried in the Sacred Heart of Jesus shrine in Sao Leopoldo. Johann Baptist Reus is extremely well known in Brazil. His tomb is the destination of many pilgrims . The beatification process began in 1958.
