Spiritual

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The spiritual holds an office in Catholic or Protestant institutions. Spirituals are mainly active for spiritual accompaniment in religious communities and seminaries . In the Roman Catholic Church, a spiritual is always a priest .

Religious orders

In religious communities one finds spiritual especially in communities of nuns . Often the rituals in such cases come from the respective male order so that the spirituality of the order can be better preserved and conveyed; Benedictine nuns , for example, are usually looked after by Benedictine religious priests . The activity of the spiritual in a convent relates only to the spiritual accompaniment of the sisters and the celebration of the liturgy as a chaplain. Members of the order, including those who live in a papal enclosure , have the right at any time to confess to a priest other than the spiritual if they so wish .

Seminaries

In contrast to the leader of the seminary (called Regens or Superior), the spiritual is allowed to give the seminarians the sacrament of penance . At least one spiritual must be assigned for each seminar. He has no leadership role in the seminar and is not allowed to pass on any personal details or private statements by or about seminarians to the seminar leader or to outsiders, even if they have been made outside of confession, since in seminaries there is a strict separation between forum internum and forum externum prevails. In principle, the spiritual is not included in the decision on whether or not to admit a candidate to the sacrament of ordination.
