Santa Maria do Herval , officially Portuguese Município de Santa Maria do Herval , Riograndenser Hunsrückisch tea forest , is a municipality in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul . It has around 6,300 inhabitants (as of 2018), of which 70% are rural, and is located about 75 kilometers north of Porto Alegre and 25 kilometers south of Gramado in the Serra Gaúcha . Before it became independent as a municipality , the town of Santa Maria do Herval was part of Dois Irmãos , before that of São Leopoldo .

Santa Maria do Herval borders (starting in the north clockwise) with Nova Petrópolis , Gramado , Três Coroas , Igrejinha , Nova Hartz , Sapiranga , Morro Reuter and Picada Café . The mountainous municipality, which is partly overgrown with primeval forest, rises to over 600 meters.

history

The original indigenous inhabitants of the region, the Kaingang , were also called Bugres (roughly means unbelievers). From 1835 the first German immigrants from the Hunsrück settled in the district of Morro dos Bugres , and from 1844 in Linha Herval , today's center, which the locals call Teewald . Even today most of the residents still speak the Riograndenser Hunsrückisch .

In a plebiscite in April 1988, the majority of residents decided to form their own municipality. It consists of the districts of Morro dos Bugres , Boa Vista do Herval , Linha Marcondes , Vila Amizade , Vila Kunst , Vila Ferraria , Vila Seger , Nova Renânia and Padre Eterno .

In 1991 there were 5185 inhabitants, in 2000 5891 inhabitants and in 2010 6053 inhabitants who are called Hervalenses ( Hervalenses ).

Economy and tourism

Santa Maria do Herval has a rural character with potato growing , poultry farming and four shoe factories.

The most important event is the Potato Festival , which takes place every year in May . During other seasons, visitors come for the 125-meter-high Cascata do Herval waterfall (the trail leads behind the falling water), the many bathing spots in the rivers, the almost untouched Mata Atlântica and for the half-timbered houses and other signs of German settlement.
