I Want to Know What Love Is (English for: " I want to know what love is ") is a song by Mick Jones , which was first known in the interpretation of the band Foreigner from 1984 .

The power ballad was written by Jones and produced for Foreigner by him and Alex Sadkin, with the choruses also being sung by the New Jersey Mass Choir, Jennifer Holliday and the Thompson Twins .

The song was popular in many countries and is still played very often on the radio today ; it was also covered by a number of performers.

The original version was released in November 1984 and stayed number one for three weeks in the UK , two weeks number one in the US , five weeks number one in Australia , number one in Canada , Norway and Sweden, and number two in Switzerland and South Africa and third place in Germany . The single was a million seller in the United States.

In 2004 the song made it to number 476 in the list of Rolling Stones 500 best songs of all time and in 2006 number 65 in VH 1's 100 greatest of the 80’s .

The title can be found in the soundtrack of the video games Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and SingStar '80s as well as in the films Larry the Cable Guy , Fucking Åmål and Rock of Ages as well as Killer's Bodyguard and subsequently Trip into the Hereafter in the television series Miami Vice and in the final episode of season 3 Orange Is the New Black .
