Julio Iglesias (2007)

Julio Iglesias de la Cueva [ ˈxuljo iˈɣlesjas ] (born September 23, 1943 in Madrid ) is a Spanish singer and former football player. With over 300 million records sold and around 390 gold and platinum record awards, he is considered one of the most successful individual performers. He sings in 14 languages, including Spanish , Italian , German , French , English and Portuguese .

Origin and family

Iglesias was born in Madrid as the first son of the well-known gynecologist Julio Iglesias Puga (1915-2005) and María del Rosario de la Cueva y Perignat (1919-2002). Julio Iglesias has a brother, Carlos (* 1947). His father came from the Galician city of Ourense , his ancestors on his mother's side come from Puerto Rico , Cuba and Andalusia .

From 1971 to 1979 he was married to the Filipino diplomat daughter Isabel Preysler (* 1951). The children from this marriage were Chábeli Iglesias (* 1971), Julio José Iglesias (* 1973) and Enrique Iglesias (* 1975). The two sons are successful musicians themselves. The daughter works as a news journalist in Washington, DC

He has lived with the Dutch ex-model Miranda Johanna Maria Rijnsburger (born October 5, 1965) since 1992 and has been married to her since August 24, 2010. Together they have five children: Miguel Alejandro (* September 7, 1997), Rodrigo (* April 3, 1999), Victoria and Christina (* both May 1, 2001) and Guillermo (* May 5, 2007). The wedding took place at their home in Marbella . The couple still own a property on Indian Creek Island in Florida and a house in Punta Cana , Dominican Republic .

Iglesias made headlines in the rainbow press through his countless affairs. This earned him the reputation of a tireless womanizer and heartbreaker . In October 1992 he was obliged to acknowledge his paternity to the Spaniard Javier Sánchez Santos by court order. However, the judgment was overturned due to a formal error. At the end of 2017, another application for recognition of paternity was submitted to the court.

Due to his great success, his father was kidnapped by Basque separatists in Spain in December 1981 and was only liberated after 19 days.

education

In his youth he was a talented football player and goalkeeper for Real Madrid Castilla , Real Madrid's junior team , with whom he played in the Segunda División . After a traffic accident that ended his football career, he first studied law with the aim of later entering the diplomatic service, but dropped out in 1968. During his 20-month hospital stay, he discovered his love for music and learned to play the guitar. After a break of 33 years, he finished his studies in 2001 at the Complutense University in Madrid, majoring in “International Law”, “for his father's sake ” and is admitted to the bar in Spain.

Act

Julio Iglesias at the Eurovision Song Contest 1970

Sent by his parents to Cambridge in 1968 to recuperate and improve his English skills , he wrote his first song La vida sigue igual ( Life Goes on as Usual ), with which he won the Song Festival in Benidorm and laid the foundation for his career. In 1970 he represented his country with the title Gwendolyne at the Grand Prix de la Chanson de l'Eurovision and finished fourth.

After the albums Como el álamo al camino (1972), El amor (1975), A mis 33 años (1977) and Emociones (1978), Iglesias decided to switch to the record company CBS and to sign a multi-million dollar contract with his father of Latin-Pop secured a further 85 million DM in five years from 1987. He has not been writing his own songs since 1984.

In the early 1980s, Iglesias conquered the US market. In spring 1984 he recorded the album 1100 Bel Air Place with Diana Ross , Stan Getz , the Beach Boys , the Pointer Sisters and with the country star Willie Nelson .

Julio Iglesias was repeatedly plagued by severe depression, which prevented him from performing his musical activities and, as an obsessive worker, made records, fame and fortune appear as "waste products", as he himself said. Regardless of this, however, he was also noticed by extravagances, such as B. by flying water from Miami to Los Angeles , because he was of the opinion that the Californian water was too calcareous for his hair.

In 1993 Iglesias had to answer in Argentina in a plagiarism lawsuit. The court found it proven that he had copied the song Yolanda by the Argentinian Larry Moreno with his hit Morrinas, recorded in 1982 , and he was thereupon sentenced to pay compensation of 300,000 pesos (approx. € 51,300; as of September 2, 2012 ). He was unwilling to pay the fine, and in early 1996 his Argentine ranch was threatened with an auction.

His album Divorcio was sold over 350,000 times in just a few days in 2003 and dominated the hit lists in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Russia. A ten-month world tour followed with good sales figures. For the Asian market he recorded the successful song Crazy especially in Mandarin , Indonesian and Filipino and replaced Diana Ross, with whom he previously sang the duet All of You , with local artists.

In the almost 40 years of his career, Iglesias has given more than 5,000 concerts and sold over 250 million records in more countries than any other singer. For this he received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records .

At a ceremony in December 2011 at the Instituto Cervantes , Iglesias announced that it would withdraw from the public.
