José Vélez
José Vélez (born on November 15, 1951 as José Velázquez Jiménez in Telde , Gran Canaria ) is a Spanish singer from the Canary Islands who represented Spain at the 1978 Eurovision Song Contest .
Career
At the end of the 1960s, a music teacher from the Organización Juvenil Española (Spanish youth organization) founded the music group Grupo Marabilla with some students. José Velázquez was among them. After the group broke up, Velázquez began a solo career. In 1968 he took part in the Salto a la fama competition in Madrid , which earned him some attention.
In 1976 he brought out his first album Vino Griego ( Greek wine with a version of the song by Udo Jürgens ). In 1977 he took part in the Sopot International Song Festival . The title of his contribution was Romántica . In 1978 he was selected by Spanish television TVE as a participant in his country for the Eurovision Song Contest in Paris . His contribution was Bailemos un vals . He was ninth out of twenty participants. Since then he has had success with 19 platinum and 32 gold records , especially in Latin America .
