Real Madrid Castilla is the second team for the Spanish football club Real Madrid . The team, which serves the talents of their own youngsters as a springboard to the first team, plays in the Segunda División B , the third highest division of Spanish football.

history

AD Plus Ultra (1947-1972)

At the beginning of the 20th century, when Spanish football did not yet have regulated youth categories, friendly amateur teams began to rally around the renowned clubs, which also served as a talent factory (often for financial support).

In the case of Real Madrid, a large number of clubs in the Spanish capital performed this function. Before the Spanish Civil War these were e.g. B. Deportivo Pardiñas, Primitiva Amistad, Sociedad Recreativa El Cafeto, Stadium FC, Patria Balompié, Imperio FC, Sociedad Deportiva Leganés. Many of these amateur clubs disappeared in the wake of the armed conflict. After the war, Ferroviaria, Coppel, Mediodía, Girod and Cifesa Real Madrid served as talent forges.

In 1947, the then President Santiago Bernabéu signed an agreement with the Agrupación Deportiva Plus Ultra , a sports club founded in 1930, which at that time played in the Tercera División (then the third division) and became Real Madrid's second team from then on.

The agreement was quite simple: the “parent club” promised AD Plus Ultra financial support and was given the right to use or take over players from the club at any time. From 1952 the Spanish federation obliged all professional teams to operate an amateur team of their own. AD Plus Ultra now officially took over this role at Real Madrid . ( Plus ultra (lat. Always on ) was the motto of Emperor Charles V and has been the official motto of Spain ever since.)

Already in the 1948/49 season, the team had reached first place in the Tercera División and was promoted to the Segunda División for the first time , where the team, with the exception of the seasons 1953–1955 and 1956/57, could hold up until 1963 . From this point on, things went downhill with AD Plus Ultra , not least after the insurance company of the same name ended its sponsorship. In the 1970/71 and 1971/72 seasons, the team only reached 11th and 10th place in the table in the Tercera División , so Real Madrid decided in the summer of 1972 to close the club. The license as Real Madrid's second team was transferred to Castilla Club de Fútbol , a club founded by Real Madrid itself on June 21, 1972 . The name was based on a club that emerged in 1931 from former footballers of the missing Racing Club Chamberí .

From the fruitful relationship between Real Madrid and AD Plus Ultra, players such as Zárraga , Mateos , Marsal , Casado , Vidal , Serena , Grosso or Vicente del Bosque as well as coach Miguel Muñoz joined the professional squad of the royal team. Also, Luis Aragones , who later became the star of the local rivals Atletico Madrid , played in his youth for Real Madrid branch team.

Castilla CF (1972-1990)

Under the name Castilla CF , the "reserve" Real Madrid should go through the most successful era. In the 1973/74 season, the later defensive star Real Madrid and the national team José Antonio Camacho were in the ranks of the team. In the 1977/78 season, the team finished the newly founded Segunda División B , which from then on replaced the Tercera División as the third division, in first place and rose to the Segunda División . In the 1979/80 season , Castilla CF surprisingly reached the final of the Spanish Cup ( Copa del Rey ) after the team remained victorious against well-known opponents such as Racing Santander and the then first division shareholders Hércules Alicante , Athletic Bilbao , Real Sociedad and Sporting Gijón . There they were defeated by the “mother team” Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu with 1: 6. Ricardo Gallego , who subsequently made a name for himself both in the first team of the Royal as well as in the Spanish national team , was also part of the branch's squad .

This also justified participation in the 1980/81 European Cup Winners' Cup , a success that is still unique among branch teams in Europe. In the first round, however, the team was eliminated after extra time against West Ham United (HS: 3: 1, RS: 1: 5 afterwards). In the ranks of Castilla CF was defender Miguel Porlan "Chendo" , who celebrated numerous successes in the first team from 1982 to 1998.

In the 1983/84 season Castilla CF was finally champion of the Segunda División , but was not allowed to rise to the first division due to the rule that branch teams may not compete in the same division as the first team. Part of the squad was the legendary Quinta del Buitre , a class consisting of the players Emilio Butragueño , Rafael Martín Vázquez , Manolo Sanchís , Míchel and Miguel Pardeza , who should celebrate numerous successes in the first team. The then goalkeeper of Castilla CF José Manuel Ochotorena also made it into the A-Team.

Other famous players of those days who made a name for themselves as professionals in other teams are, for example, the star of Atlético Madrid and Real Valladolid José Luis Caminero or goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares , who celebrated numerous successes, especially at Valencia CF.

In 1990 the second team had to be renamed Real Madrid B due to a decree of the Spanish Football Association . This act met with little approval from the fans, which is why the second team kept the nickname el Castilla as the slang term. At the same time, after twelve seasons in the Segunda División, relegation to the third division took place.

Real Madrid B (1990-2005)

Already under the name Real Madrid B succeeded in the 1990/91 season, the immediate promotion to the Segunda División . There the team, with remarkable results like fourth place in 1995/96 or two sixth places in 1992/93 and 1993/94, should hold up until 1997. In that era, numerous players made it to Real Madrid's first squad via the B-Team. Examples of this are two later club legends such as Raúl and Guti . But Alfonso Pérez Muñoz , Dani García Lara , Ismael Urzaiz , Pedro Contreras , Víctor Sánchez and Víctor Fernández as well as the Argentine Juan Esnáider or the Nigerian Mutiu Adepoju , who were supposed to celebrate their greatest successes at other clubs, went through the royal talent factory at that time . In the 1996/97 season, the relegation to the third division took place although the squad was peppered with numerous young Spanish and international talent. The Argentine Esteban Cambiasso , later star player at Inter Milan and his national team, played for Real Madrid B that season as did the Brazilians César Luís Prates and Iarley and the Spaniards García Calvo , Javi Guerrero and Mista . Even Samuel Eto'o , of his greatest successes at archrival FC Barcelona should celebrate, stood at that season in the squad's second team, but the rules of the Spanish Federation allowed due to his young age not to bet.

The following eight seasons spent the team in the Segunda División B . Nevertheless, in addition to the later goalkeeper Iker Casillas , additional players such as Raúl Bravo , Francisco Pavón , Álvaro Mejía , Borja Fernández or Antonio Núñez gradually made it into the first team. The long-awaited promotion was successful in the 2004/05 season when the team coached by Juan Ramón López Caro was able to win Group I of the Segunda B and prevailed in the promotion play-off against Real Saragossa B and UB Conquense . The team played the decisive second leg against Conquense in front of 57,326 spectators at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu , a new record for the third division in Spain. The team included some footballers who would later make a name for themselves as professionals, such as goalkeeper Diego López or field players Álvaro Arbeloa , Juanfran , Javi García , José Manuel Jurado , Rubén de la Red , Borja Valero and Roberto Soldado . In the summer of 2005, the management of Real Madrid decided in the wake of the euphoria about being promoted back to the Segunda División to change its name to Real Madrid Castilla , which the Spanish Football Association approved on application.
