Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid

Santiago Bernabéu Yeste (born June 8, 1895 in Almansa , † June 2, 1978 in Madrid ) was a Spanish football player and official. From 1943 to 1978 he was President of Real Madrid .

Life

Santiago Bernabéu was born in Almansa but moved to Madrid with his parents as a child and joined Real Madrid's youth team in 1909 at the age of 14 . In 1912 he played for the first team of the club, whose captain he soon became. Besides, he studied law and received his license in 1915 as a lawyer . By the end of his playing career in 1927, he played 79 games, scored 69 goals and won the Copa del Rey in 1917 . In the Spanish national team , Bernabéu was not used, although he was on December 17, 1922 in the squad for the international match against Portugal in Lisbon .

Bernabéu then remained associated with the association in various functions. In 1929 he became secretary of the Junta Directiva and held this office until 1935. After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Bernabéu, who sympathized with the Confederación Española de Derechas Autónomas , sought refuge in the French embassy for two years. He then went into exile in France . In the final months of the conflict he served as a private under General Agustín Muñoz Grandes .

When he returned to work at Real Madrid after the war, he found a club that had been destroyed: numerous players and board members had died during the war. Therefore, Atlético Madrid , renamed Atlético Aviación , was now the first representative of the capital when it came to football, while Real Madrid initially received no state funding for reconstruction. As a result, Bernabéu tried in the following months to re-establish contact with former players, directors and club members and thus to help the club back on its feet. In 1940 he accepted a post as a functionary in the Ministry of Finance and married his partner María Valenciano; the marriage remained childless. When fan riots broke out during a clásicos between Madrid and FC Barcelona in 1943 and the presidents of the two clubs were forced to resign by the government, Santiago Bernabéu was elected as the new club president of Real Madrid on September 15, 1943 .

Bernabéu's goals were to build a new stadium as well as to renovate and professionalize the club. In June 1944, the club acquired a plot of land adjacent to the old Estadio de Chamartín , on which the Nuevo Estadio Chamartín was inaugurated on December 14, 1947 , which at that time offered 75,000 spectators. As early as 1955, it was decided to rename the venue the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu . In addition, Bernabéu subsequently shaped the future operational structure of sports clubs by reorganizing all club levels, placing an independent specialist team in front of each department and hiring ambitious visionaries such as Raimundo Saporta .

In order for sporting success to set in, Bernabéu undertook an ambitious transfer policy, the climax of which was the signing of Alfredo Di Stéfano . During his presidency, some of the club's greatest legends wore the white club jerseys, including Luis Molowny , Miguel Muñoz , Francisco Gento , Héctor Rial , José Santamaría , Raymond Kopa , Ferenc Puskás , Amancio Amaro , Pirri , Günter Netzer , Juanito and Vicente del Bosque . Real Madrid celebrated numerous successes in the 35 years of Bernabéu's presidency and became world famous. In addition to 16 national championship titles, six successes in the Spanish Cup and winning the World Cup , the five successive triumphs in the newly introduced European Cup (1956-1960) contributed to the myth that shaped the entire future of the club.

In the last years of his life, Bernabéu remained president of the association, but asked the board to look for a representative for his work for health reasons. In 1977, Bernabéu had to undergo several operations that were successful. Soon after, however, he was diagnosed with cancer , to which he succumbed in June 1978.

For his work for football, Santiago Bernabéu was posthumously awarded the FIFA Medal of Merit in 2002 .

Others

In honor of the former president, Real Madrid has held a football tournament named after him every summer since 1979, the Trofeo Santiago Bernabéu .
