El Clásico
As El Clásico ( "classic") is in the Spanish language a football match between the teams of Mr. Professional Real Madrid and FC Barcelona respectively. The meeting of the most successful clubs from the two largest metropolises in Spain is considered to be one of the most important duels in club football and has been attracting great interest outside the country for some time. The reasons for the rivalry are complex and range from the sporting competition to the regional contrasts of Castile and Catalonia to the politically different currents attributed to the teams.
terminology
For the matches between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, various names were and are in use, in addition to El Clásico (in Spanish) and El clàssic (in Catalan ) for example El Superclásico ('The Super Classic'), El Derbi ('The Derby') ), El Gran Derbi ('The Great Derby') or El Derbi español ('The Spanish Derby'). The term El Clásico is most common in Spain , a term that has also caught on in the rest of Europe. In Spanish-speaking Central and South America, this is different, as El Clásico also stands for other duels there - especially those between Club América and Deportivo Guadalajara in Mexico , Barcelona SC and CS Emelec in Ecuador and for the city derby between Boca Juniors and River Plate in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires (see Superclásico ). That is why in these countries the clash between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona is usually referred to as El Derbi español - although in the strict sense it is not a derby , as the clubs do not come from the same city or region.
Other matches in football are similarly named based on this clash, such as the games between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Marseille in France (see Le Classique ). In German football, the ironic name El Plastico is sometimes used for a game between the clubs TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig , which were built with a lot of sponsorship money , whereby the "artificiality" of the clubs is represented by the allusion to the term plastic (colloquial for plastic ) .
backgrounds
The reasons for the pronounced rivalry between the two clubs are complex. On the one hand, they represent the two largest and most economically important metropolises in the country in terms of population, namely Madrid and Barcelona , two cities with similarities but also numerous differences. The former is the capital of Spain, is located in the center of the country at 667 meters above sea level and is part of the historic Castile landscape , the latter in turn is an important Mediterranean port on the north-east coast of the country and in turn the capital of Catalonia. Geographical, sociopolitical, cultural and historical contrasts have always shaped the rivalry between the two cities and regions, which subsequently also had an impact on sport in general and football in particular.
This confrontation was also intensified during the Francoist era, when, especially in Catalonia, having its own football club became a symbol of resistance to the central government and the defense of Catalan culture. At the same time, Real Madrid, a club from the hated capital and usually the biggest rival for the title, was given the role of the antagonist , the representative of centralized and Francoist Spain. This was and is, however, controversial among Real fans, as they feel like an apolitical football club.
The transition in Spain from 1975 to 1982 brought some relaxation, but the fact that these are by far the most successful and most popular sports clubs in the country, and consequently they regularly compete for national and international trophies, and of course the confrontational ones still present for many stories, enough to keep the great rivalry alive.
history
Early years (1902-1936)
The first meeting of the two teams took place on May 13, 1902, in the course of the Copa de la Coronación (Coronation Cup of Alfonso XIII. ), A predecessor of the Copa del Rey . FC Barcelona, at that time already with six foreigners in its ranks (including the German Udo Steinberg), was able to beat the recently founded Real Madrid, then still under the name Madrid Foot-Ball Club , 3-1 in the Spanish capital. Udo Steinberg scored the first two goals for Barcelona, so he is El Clásico's first goalscorer .
In 1916 , in the semi-finals of the cup competition, the first polemical clash between the clubs took place. Both had won their home games, so, as was common at the time, there was a replay. This ended in a memorable match after regular playing time 4: 4 and after extra time 6: 6, which made another decisive duel necessary. When Madrid FC finally took the lead 4-2 in extra time after a 2-2 draw in regular time, the FC Barcelona players left the field to protest that they felt they were being disadvantaged by the referee. When the Madrilenians subsequently reached the final, they had to face Athletic Bilbao in Barcelona . The Madrid players complained about the aggressive mood on the part of the Catalan fans, in the end they had to be escorted from the stadium by the police, despite their 4-0 defeat against Athletic.
Interestingly, because the two other qualified teams had canceled, the competition this season only consisted of this semi-final, which ultimately produced a total of four games, and the final against Athletic Bilbao, which was set by the bye. Aside from Barça's home game, Santiago Bernabéu had scored in each of the games and was top scorer with six goals from this one semi-final. Vicente Martínez and Paulino Alcántara had scored five and four goals respectively for Barcelona .
The first league encounter took place on February 17, 1929 in Barcelona and the game ended with a 1: 2 for Real Madrid . After a strong first half of the season, the Madrilenians were overtaken by FC Barcelona in the second half of the season, so that they secured the first championship.
On February 3, 1935, the Madrilenians celebrated with an 8-2 in the Estadio de Chamartín the highest victory so far in a league game between the two opponents. Sañudo (4), Lazcano (3) and Regueiro scored the hosts' goals , while Escolà and Guzmán scored for the guests .
First political conflict
When the civil war broke out in 1936, Real Madrid, then because of the Second Spanish Republic under the name Madrid FC , led by their then coach Francisco Bru , who had played for Barcelona for a long time , requested participation in the Catalan championship to avoid the chaos of war escape the state capital. The Madrilenians agreed to play their home games at the Estadi de Montjuïc . This project ultimately failed only because of the veto of FC Barcelona, while the rest of the Catalan clubs and the players' union spoke out in favor of accepting the capital city. The exclusion led to internal conflicts, and the Catalan players' union, led by Barça player Martí Ventolrà , even threatened to strike. On November 3, 1936, Madrid FC finally renounced participation in the Catalan championship.
Franquist dictatorship (1939-1975)
Although the duels between the clubs have always been characterized by the rivalry between the two most important cities in Spain, Madrid and Barcelona, and also by the differences between the historical regions of Castile and Catalonia, the greatest tensions only began after the Spanish Civil War (1936– 39). In the broken country, marked by political tensions, a series of controversial encounters and decisions established the rivalry between the clubs that continues to this day:
11: 1 in Madrid
On June 13, 1943, the two clubs met in a second leg of the Copa del Rey in Madrid. The favored Catalans had won the first leg 3-0. Real Madrid, which could only finish the league in a disappointing tenth place, won the second leg 11-1 (8-0), but FC Barcelona players and the Catalan media complained about intimidation attempts by a security director in the dressing room before the game . Many see these events as the starting signal for the great rivalry between the clubs. The mutual accusations and insults even went so far that the Spanish association persuaded both club presidents, Marqués de la Mesa de Asta for the Catalans and Antonio Santos Peralba for the Madrilenians, to resign.
The Di Stéfano case
In the first fourteen years of the Francoist dictatorship, FC Barcelona, with five championship titles between 1945 and 1953, and Atlético Madrid , at that time the official club of the Air Force under the name Atlético Aviación , were the dominant clubs in Spanish football. Real Madrid had not yet recovered from the civil war and were in a period of rebuilding. The signing of Alfredo Di Stéfano is seen as a turning point in the history of Spanish football , and this too is a symbol of the confrontation between the two rivals. In 1953, FC Barcelona was on the verge of signing the exceptional Argentinian footballer, which Real Madrid also tried to achieve. Di Stéfano had already signed for Barça, but since there were problems with the player's license and Real's president Santiago Bernabéu left no stone unturned to sign him, a protracted transfer dispute developed. Finally, the Spanish Football Association decided that Di Stéfano should play for two years for both clubs. FC Barcelona considered this solution to be unacceptable and declared that they would forego the player. The reasons for this are controversial. While some Barça fans claim that pressure was exerted by the Franco regime (which is not very friendly to the Catalans), Real Madrid supporters usually take the view that FC Barcelona voluntarily gave up the player. There is also the opinion that Di Stéfano, who was not very convincing in some friendly games for Real Madrid during the transfer dispute, deliberately performed poorly in the preparation games to persuade Barcelona to give up. This theory is supported by the fact that Di Stéfano - just one week after the Catalans waived the transfer - looked like a substitute: He contributed three goals to Real's 5-0 victory over Barça in the championship, and should go to the Madrilenians in the following years lead five victories in a row in the newly created European Cup . Although the Real Madrid club always saw itself as apolitical and still does so today, the Catalan side gradually identified it as the club of the Franquist central regime, while FC Barcelona was seen as a symbol of the suppressed culture and aspirations for autonomy in Catalonia. This gave the rivalry between the clubs a character that went far beyond sporting aspects.
Ellis and Leafe, European Champion Clubs' Cup 1960/61
In the 1960/61 European Cup , it was FC Barcelona that stopped Real Madrid's run of success in the round of 16 after five titles in a row when they won the second leg 2-1 after 2-2 in the first leg could. From the point of view of Madrid fans, the referee performances were England's Arthur Ellis , who gave the Catalans a controversial penalty in the first leg despite his linesman indicating offside, and Reg Leafe in the second leg, who scored four goals from Luis del Sol , Di Stéfano, Pachín and Francisco Gento annulled, decisive, whereby this duel also strained the relations between the clubs.
Puskás' gala at Camp Nou
On January 27, 1963, in one of the last appearances of the "White Ballet" at the Camp Nou, Real Madrid celebrated the highest away win in history with a 5-1 win. Man of the day was the Hungarian Ferenc Puskás with three goals, Di Stéfano and Gento contributed one more each. Only a little later, namely in the summer of 1964, the Di Stéfano era ended with the people of the capital.
The final of the bottles
On July 11, the two arch-rivals met in the final of the Copa del Generalísimo 1968 in the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium . After the 1-0 victory of the guests, there were riots. The audience started throwing bottles onto the field. Since that day, it is forbidden to bring glass bottles into all Spanish stadiums. In connection with these events, Madrid fans mention the referee Antonio Rigo, who had refereed thirteen league matches and all FC Barcelona cup games from the quarter-finals onwards, very benevolently for the Catalans.
Guruceta's penalty kick
Another chapter of the polemical confrontations was written on June 6, 1970. Barcelona faced Real Madrid at home in the second leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-finals after the capitals won the first leg 2-0. Barcelona were leading 1-0 when referee Emilio Guruceta gave Real Madrid a penalty for a foul by Joaquim Rifé on Manuel Velázquez . As the fouled person later confirmed, the rule violation took place outside the penalty area. When Barça captain Eladio was excluded for protesting a little later, massive spectator riots and an invasion of the pitch in Camp Nou resulted in the game being abandoned and the police intervening. For many Barcelona fans, this referee mistake was and is proof of the systematic disadvantage they saw at the time. Real Madrid supporters argue that such wrong decisions happen in football, even in El Clásico, even without a dictatorship - and also in favor of the Catalans.
Cruyff's Gala at the Bernabéu
On February 17, 1974, FC Barcelona achieved one of their most impressive successes against their arch-rivals. Johan Cruyff , signed this summer, led the Catalans to a 5-0 win at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The goals were scored by Asensi (2), Cruyff, Juan Carlos and Sotil. In the same year, the exceptional Dutch footballer should win his only championship title in the ranks of FC Barcelona.
The 0: 5 was Real's biggest home defeat against Barça. For some fans of FC Barcelona this victory symbolized the approaching end of Franco's rule. Günter Netzer was part of the game for Madrid that day and was able to feel "what this victory meant for the Franco opponents".
Transition to the present (since 1975)
With the transition in Spain , the transition to a parliamentary democracy and the founding of the autonomous communities , the political tensions between the clubs and, above all, their supporters, became somewhat less. The strong rivalry remained, however, and so there have been recurring games and very polemical incidents in the recent past.
Supercup finals 1993
In the final second leg of the Spanish Supercup , the two arch-rivals met on December 16, 1993 at Camp Nou. Real Madrid had already won the first leg 3-1, and they also took the lead in Barcelona with a goal from Iván Zamorano . Barcelona could only equalize through José Mari Bakero . When the victorious players did a lap of honor, the angry audience began to throw objects at the opponents, who had to leave the stadium with a police escort.
The return of Figo
Another big scandal occurred on November 23, 2002 at Camp Nou. The Portuguese Luís Figo , team captain until the summer of 2000 and one of the crowd favorites in the ranks of FC Barcelona, returned to his former stadium wearing Real Madrid jersey. It was his second appearance at the arch-rival's venue, but this time an aggressive campaign by various Catalan media, including FC Barcelona board members, against his person preceded the encounter. During the course of the game, the Portuguese midfielder was constantly pelted with various objects by the audience and when the situation threatened to escalate in the course of a corner kick he had to take, the referee had to stop the game for fifteen minutes. The throwing of a pig's head is particularly memorable , but glass bottles, a billiard ball and a jackknife also flew towards Figo. The Spanish federation decided to close the FC Barcelona stadium for two matches, but the club itself refused to accept this penalty and took legal action against it. In a controversial decision, the association finally lifted the lock on August 1, 2005 and converted it into a 4,000 euro fine.
"Madrid, pay homage to the master"
Three years later (in 2005) the Cameroon national player Samuel Eto'o , who previously played for Real and had switched to Barça via RCD Mallorca , caused a stir: at the championship celebration of FC Barcelona, he sang in front of the cameras: Madrid, cabrón, saluda al campeón! ("Madrid, you fucking club, pay homage to the master!"). Eto'o later publicly apologized for his behavior and was fined € 12,000 by the Spanish association.
Ronaldinho's gala at the Bernabéu
A memorable game between the rivals took place in Madrid on November 19, 2005: After Samuel Eto'o had scored the 0-1 after submission by Lionel Messi , Ronaldinho scored the other two goals, each after spectacular tempo dribbles in which he had several opponents played out or overflowed, bridging half the playing field. Barça won the game 3-0. In the end, Ronaldinho's performance received a standing ovation from the Madrid audience; the only Barça player who had previously received applause at the Bernabeu Stadium was Maradona . Ronaldinho was named both European and World Player of the Year at the end of this season.
Trellis for the 2008 master
In the Primera Division, it has long been a tradition for a club that has been established as the Spanish champions ahead of time to form a line up until the end of the season: The players of the teams still playing against the new champions stand in two rows before the start of the game thus form the trellis through which the champions' players enter the stadium to the applause of their opponents. In 2008, FC Barcelona was humiliated in several ways at the second leg of the classic in Madrid. After the Madrilenians had become Spanish champions prematurely in the 2007/08 season , it was an English week. The following Wednesday, just three days after winning the title, the arch enemy from Barcelona was a guest at the Bernabeu Stadium. The Catalans not only had to form the traditional trellis for champions Real Madrid before the start of the game, they were then cleared 4-1, despite the celebrations on the part of the Madrilenians three days earlier. This Clásico is a high point for Madrid and a low point in the history of the classic for FC Barcelona.
2: 6 in Madrid
On May 2, 2009, the two teams met in Madrid in a "final game" for the championship. Leader of the table Barcelona had already won the first Clásico of the season on matchday 15 with 2-0 and gained a comfortable 12-point lead. As a result, pursuers Real celebrated 17 wins in 18 games and reduced the gap to four points. A home win in the second Clásico would have brought Real up to one point on their arch-rivals; the title fight would have been open again four game days before the end. But it didn't come to that: Despite an early 0: 1 deficit, Barcelona won 6: 2 (3: 1), after the 5: 0 in 1974 the highest away win against Real. Barça also scored six goals for the first time in Madrid, while this sixth goal marked the Catalans' 100th goal of the season.
Messi vs. Ronaldo (2009-2018)
When Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid for the 2009/10 season, the Clásico was also a meeting place for the world's best footballers for nine years: between 2009 and 2018, when Ronaldo left Madrid and switched to Juventus Turin , the world footballer's name was always Ronaldo or Messi. The Clásico was thus stylized by the media as a private test of strength for these two.
The particular rivalry between the two clubs was particularly evident in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons, when Pep Guardiola and José Mourinho coached Barcelona and Madrid at the same time. During this period provocations and assaults occurred on and off the pitch, which resulted in numerous yellow and red cards. Already the first clash in the league round, which Barcelona sensationally won 5-0, ended with physical abuse and a dismissal for Real Madrid. In the semi-finals of the Champions League , Mourinho's dismissal and the subsequent dismissal from the stands were not insignificant for the fact that Barcelona won the game and made it to the final of the competition. From a sporting point of view, FC Barcelona was mostly superior during this time. Although Real Madrid in 2011 by a tight final victory against arch-rivals Cup winner but won the championship and Champions League in the same year the FC Barcelona. In 2012, the Catalans won the Spanish and European Super Cups as well as the Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. In the league, however, this time Real Madrid celebrated the championship with a new point and goal record. After losing the championship title, Guardiola finally left FC Barcelona. A year later, Mourinho's contract in Madrid was also terminated. This initiated a phase of slight relaxation.
In the Messi-Ronaldo era, FC Barcelona largely dominated national events, while Real Madrid ultimately celebrated more international success: Barcelona recorded a total of six championships, five cup wins and two UEFA Champions League titles. In the same period, Real Madrid only won the championship and the cup twice. However, from the 2013/14 season onwards, the Madrilenians celebrated four Champions League victories within five years: Under coach Zinédine Zidane , they even managed to win the European title (2016-2018).
2018/2019 season with Barcelona's dominance in league and cup
The following season Barcelona won both league games and have not lost to Madrid since the 2016/17 season. The Barcelona team also remained unbeaten in the cup and defeated Real Madrid in the second leg after a draw in the first leg in Barcelona, so that the team could move into the 2019 cup final against Valencia CF. The Clásico took place twice in Madrid within a week, with FC Barcelona winning the game 3-0 with two goals from Luis Suárez , an own goal from Raphäel Varane and 1-0 with a goal from Ivan Rakitic . With the last game, Barcelona overtook Madrid in the number of games they won for over 80 years.
Media attention
"El Clásico" is one of the most watched sporting events in the world. Around 400 million people from over 30 different countries watched the live broadcast of the league game on October 7, 2012, which ended in a 2-2 draw. The kick-off time for the first leg of the 2017/18 season has been set by the league at 13:00 CET in order to serve the Asian market. The game at the Bernabéu ended 3-0 for FC Barcelona.
Involved players
German players
The first German to do a Clásico wearing the FC Barcelona jersey was Udo Steinberg , who was in the 1902 Copa de la Coronación when the two clubs met for the first time. At the same time, he was with his first two goals for Barcelona - the game on May 13, 1902 ended 3-1 - the first ever goal scorer at El Clásico .
The second German Clásico participant - again for "Barça" - was Emil Walter in 1929. Bernd Schuster played a total of 20 games ; 14 of them as a Barcelona player and six for Real Madrid. Between 1977 and 1985, Uli Stielike was in 18 Clásico editions for the “royal” on the pitch. Also in action for Real Madrid were: Günter Netzer (5 games between 1973 and 1976) Paul Breitner (4 times, 1974–1977), Christoph Metzelder (2 times, 2008–2009), Mesut Özil (18 games, 2010– 2013) as well as record holder Sami Khedira (21 games, 2010-2015) and the still active Toni Kroos (8 games, as of December 27, 2017). Marc-André ter Stegen was the goalkeeper for FC Barcelona in a Clásico in 2016 for the first time .
More players from the German Bundesliga
The other players who previously played in the German Bundesliga and completed a Clásico were for Barcelona a. a. the Swiss Croatian Ivan Rakitić (formerly FC Schalke 04 ) and the Frenchman Ousmane Dembelé (formerly Borussia Dortmund ).
Players who played for both teams
Numerous Spanish and international football stars donned the shirts of both clubs in the course of their careers. Examples are Ricardo Zamora , Josep Samitier , Lucien Muller , Bernd Schuster, Michael Laudrup , Gheorghe Hagi , Ronaldo or Samuel Eto'o. This often led to very negative reactions on the part of the fans, as in the case of Luis Enrique , who was always greeted with a shrill whistle by Real Madrid supporters after his move, or Luís Figo, whose transfer from FC Barcelona to arch rivals finally led to rioting at the Camp Nou in 2002.
