Alfonso Pérez Muñoz , called Alfonso , (born September 27, 1972 in Getafe ) is a former Spanish football player . The striker has played for both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona throughout his career .
Life
Alfonso was born in Getafe , a suburb of Madrid. At the beginning of his professional career he played for Real Madrid , where he replaced the legendary Emilio Butragueño as a regular striker. In 1992 he was part of the Spanish Olympic team that won the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona . At Real Madrid, Alfonso did not make the real breakthrough, which is why he moved to Betis Sevilla in 1995.
In 1997 he was the second top scorer in the Spanish Primera División behind Ronaldo with 25 goals . In 1998 he was voted Spain's Footballer of the Year . At that time he was considered one of the best strikers in Europe. But he was thrown back in the following seasons by many injury breaks.
At the EM 2000 he brought Spain into the quarter-finals with two goals in the last group game against Yugoslavia . He also scored the decisive goal in the 96th minute to make it 4: 3. As a result, however , the Spanish national team were eliminated in a dramatic match against France in the quarter-finals after team captain Raúl missed a penalty shortly before the end.
After the EM he was signed by FC Barcelona , where he could not prevail. He was then loaned to the French club Olympique Marseille . After the loan ended, he went back to Betis Sevilla . In the 2003/04 season he scored another 9 goals. In the following season he only played 100 minutes. At the end of his career, he was the first to hold the Copa del Rey in the air as a recognition from the club after winning the cup . Alfonso played 38 games for the Spanish national soccer team and scored 11 goals.
A curiosity related to him is that the Spanish club Getafe FC named their stadium after him while the footballer was still active. Alfonso had the privilege to play in the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez himself . He ended his career in the summer of 2005.
