The Getafe [ xetafe ] (officially Getafe Club de Fútbol SAD ) is a Spanish football club (sports-Aktiengesellschaft) from Getafe , a suburb of Madrid . It was founded in 1983.
The first team has played in the Primera División since the 2004/2005 season , interrupted only by a year of relegation in the 2016/17 season .
Getafe plays entirely in dark blue, entirely in red or entirely in yellow. The home stadium is the Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Pérez , which can seat 17,000 spectators.
history
In 1945 the Getafe Deportivo football club was founded in Getafe, whose team rose to the third division in 1956/57 and barely missed promotion to the second division the following year . The club played third-rate until the 1970s, when it was dissolved after a sporting decline in 1976. The association of this club with Getafe FC is more personal than institutional. This means that it is not a predecessor club, but numerous former players from Club Getafe Deportivo later played a role at Getafe FC.
The predecessor club of Getafe FC was registered in 1976 under the name Peña Madridista Getafe, originally a fan club of Real Madrid . Since 1980, the teams competed under the name Deportivo Peña Getafe. After the merger with Club Getafe Promesas in 1982, Getafe CF was finally formed in August 1983.
In the 1986/87 season, Getafe FC rose to the third-class Segunda B. 1993/94 followed the first promotion to the second division. Here you rose twice in the following years and again, the last time in the 2001/02 season. In the 2003/04 season the promotion to the Primera División was achieved for the first time. After the team secured relegation in their first first division season in 13th place, they finished ninth in the 2005/06 season and thus played first class in 2006/07 under coach Bernd Schuster . In 2007 the club reached the final of the Copa del Rey for the first time when they defeated FC Barcelona 4-0 in the semi-final second leg after a 2-5 first leg defeat . The club lost the final 1-0 to Sevilla FC .
Despite this defeat, Getafe started in the UEFA Cup for the first time in 2007/08 , as Sevilla FC had qualified for the Champions League . The club fought their way to the quarterfinals, where after two draws due to the lower number of away goals they were finally defeated by Bayern Munich .
In 2008 the club reached the Copa del Rey final for the second year in a row . The club lost the final with 1: 3 against FC Valencia . The following year 2008/09 was less successful, until the last round of Getafe FC was involved in the relegation battle of the Primera División .
On April 21, 2011 it was announced that the club was 100 percent sold to the Royal Emirates Group of Companies from Dubai ( UAE ). The club's goal is now to become “a top-class club behind Real Madrid and FC Barcelona ” in Spain , as President Ángel Torres Sánchez said after the contract was signed.
In August 2011 Getafe FC launched a controversial campaign. The club produced the film Zombies Calientes de Getafe (for example, “Hot Zombie Brides from Getafe”) to encourage its fans to provide for more offspring. The aim and success of the campaign was an increase in season ticket sales.
After twelve years Primera División, the club rose at the end of the 2015/16 season as the penultimate in the final table in the Segunda División . There they managed to get promoted again in the following season and finished eighth in the 2017/18 season , missing the European Cup by just three points. In the season 2018/19 5th place was achieved. Getafe was thus qualified for the group stage of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League .
