Aníbal Samuel Matellán (born May 8, 1977 in General Villegas , Argentina ) is an Argentine football player . He is currently under contract with the Argentine first division club Arsenal de Sarandí in the Primera División . In the 2006/2007 season, Matellán's club Gimnàstic was determined prematurely as relegated to the second division . Matellán, who is a devout Christian, lives with his wife Julietta.
Athletic career
The 1.82 meter tall and 82 kilogram defender played in his youth at Eclipse General Villegas. From 1996 to 2001 Matellán played for the Boca Juniors before the left-footed FC Schalke 04 was signed for a transfer fee of four million dollars. There he played for three years and was out for months due to an Achilles tendon injury. When Schalke subsequently signed two new central defenders, the Argentine asked to terminate his contract. The association complied with this request in early July 2004. Then he moved back to his native Argentina to the Boca Juniors. After just one year, the Spanish football club FC Getafe under coach Bernd Schuster brought the Argentinean to Spain. At Getafe, Matellán had a one-year contract with a mutual option to extend the contract. However, in 2006 he moved to the then first division promoted Gimnàstic de Tarragona. For the 2007/08 season he moved to Arsenal de Sarandí . He stayed there until 2010, during which time he made 86 appearances in which he scored four goals. In 2010 he moved to the Mexican club Club San Luis . Since Apertura 2010, 30 games have been played here with three goals scored for him.

Matellán celebrated his greatest successes in Argentina at the Boca Juniors and in Germany at Schalke 04. With the Boca Juniors he was among other things Argentine champion in 2001, winner of the Copa Libertadores in 2000 and 2001, and World Cup winner in 2000 against Real Madrid, where he played against players like Luís Figo played.
With Schalke 04, the Argentine won the DFB Cup in 2002 and reached the final of the league cup in 2001 and 2002. For Schalke 04, Matellán also played in the Champions League and the UEFA Cup . In Spain, he finished ninth with Getafe in the 2005/2006 season.
