The full-back played a total of 372 games in the Romanian League 1 , the Spanish Primera División , the Italian Serie A and the English Premier League . From 2017 to 2019 he was the coach of the Romanian national team .

Player career

Cosmin Contra started his career as a professional footballer at Politehnica Timișoara , where he was part of the first team at the age of 17 and made his debut on February 26, 1994 at the home game against UTA Arad in Divizia A. After three years, he left his home team in early 1999 for Dinamo Bucharest . There he became a regular player on the defensive position. For 800,000  US dollars , Cosmin Contra moved to the Spanish first division club Deportivo Alavés in the summer of 1999 , where he played in the successful 2000/01 UEFA Cup season . Only in the final the team had to just under 4: 5  n v. The team of Liverpool beaten.

Afterwards he recommended himself for higher tasks. After a season as a regular at AC Milan , he returned to Spain in 2002 . At Atlético Madrid he was under contract from 2002 to 2005, but never prevailed at the "Colchoneros". In the first half of the 2004/05 season he was loaned to the English first division club West Bromwich Albion . He had problems there too, so the club decided to loan him to FCU Politehnica Timișoara for the second half of the season in his Romanian hometown . After the season he moved to Getafe FC , with whom he reached the 2007 Copa del Rey final. In the winter break of the 2009/10 season he returned to his homeland and hired in January 2010 at FC Timişoara from his hometown Timişoara . On September 15, 2010 Contra was the player- coach of FC Timișoara as the successor to Vladimir Petrović , who had been appointed national coach of the Serbian national football team. After eleven league games without defeat, he was dismissed by Marian Iancu, the club's patron, on December 4, 2010 because he had publicly complained about his interference in sporting matters.

National team

In 73 international matches since 1996, Cosmin Contra have scored seven goals for the Romanian national team . He was part of the Romanian squad at the European Football Championships in 2000 and 2008 . After the World Cup qualifier against Austria on April 1, 2009, he ended his career in the national team. The resignation should only be short-lived, however, because in September 2010 the Romanian national coach Răzvan Lucescu Contra called back into his squad. The home game on September 3, 2010 against Albania was the last international game Contras.

Coaching career

From September 15, 2010 Contra was initially the player- coach of his club FC Timișoara before he devoted himself entirely to coaching. On December 4, 2010, he was released after an argument with owner Marian Iancu. He returned to Spain and was head coach of CF Fuenlabrada in the Segunda División B . On October 29, 2012 he got the opportunity to take over the Romanian club Petrolul Ploieşti in League 1 . There he won his first title as a coach when he won the Cup in 2013 . In the third qualifying round for the 2013/14 Europa League , he and his team were initially able to prevail against Vitesse Arnheim , but were eliminated in the play-off round against Swansea City .

On March 10, 2014, he left Petrolul to sign a contract with the Spanish first division club Getafe CF as the successor to Luis García the next day . At the beginning of January 2015, Contra took over the Chinese first division club Guangzhou R&F FC

As the successor to Christoph Daum , Contra became coach of the Romanian national team in September 2017 . After the direct qualification for the European Championship 2020 was not achieved, he announced his resignation in November 2019.
