Angelo Niculescu (born October 1, 1921 in Craiova , † June 20, 2015 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian football player and coach . He led the Romanian national football team to the 1970 World Cup in Mexico .
Career
Niculescu as an active player
Niculescu started playing football with Rovine Grivița in his hometown Craiova. Due to his good performance, he moved to local rivals FC Craiova after two years . Other stations in his football career were Carmen Bucharest , Ciocanul Bucharest and, at the end of his career, the famous capital city representative Dinamo Bucharest . There, however, he was never noticed as a key player and was then only used occasionally. Niculescu ended his active football career at the age of 29.
The career as a trainer and functionary
From 1953 to 1957 Niculescu worked as a coach of Dinamo Bucharest, where he was able to win the championship in 1955 . This was followed by less successful intermediate stations in the second half of the 1957/58 arch-rivals CCA Bucharest , which was taken particularly badly by the Dinamo supporters, and in the 1958/59 season at second division Tractorul Brașov . After subsequent five year break, he returned to his old love Dinamo Bucharest and spent there two winning titles other seasons, when, in 1965, the double of championship and cup victory won.
In 1967 Niculescu was appointed coach of the Romanian national football team as the successor to Ilie Oană . First of all, behind the eventual European champions Italy, he missed qualifying for the 1968 European Championship . The high point of his coaching career was the surprising qualification of Romania for the football World Cup in 1970 , where his team was eliminated after the preliminary round after narrow defeats against England and Brazil and a win against Czechoslovakia . At the end of 1972 he resigned as a national coach. Previously, Romania had only been eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 1972 European Football Championship against Hungary in the play-off.
In the autumn of 1973 Niculescu was coach of Sportul Studențesc , which he led into the top flight of Divizia A and with whom he was able to qualify for the 1976/77 UEFA Cup . There the team was able to prevail in the first round against Olympiacos Piraeus , but then retired after two defeats against FC Schalke 04 . In 1977 he moved to league rivals Politehnica Timișoara , where he again qualified for the UEFA Cup in the 1977/78 season . There he fell again in the second round.
At the beginning of the 1979/80 season Niculescu took over the coaching post at Dinamo Bucharest again, but only finished the season in fifth place. After further stations at SC Bacau and Universitatea Cluj (relegation at the end of the 1981/82 season ) and in Divizia B at Oțelul Galați , he ended his coaching career in 1983.
Niculescu later became an honorary member of the Romanian Football Association and was temporarily vice-president of the technical committee headed by Mircea Sandu . Since his wife's death in 2008, Niculescu has lived alone and secluded in a small apartment in the Romanian capital Bucharest .
