Mircea Traian "Naşu" Sandu (born October 22, 1952 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian football player and official . In his playing career, he completed a total of 407 games in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A . From 1990 to 2014 he was President of the Romanian Football Association Federația Română de Fotbal .

Player career

Mircea Sandu started playing football at the age of nine in his hometown of Bucharest with Sportul Studențesc . In 1968 he moved to local rivals Progresul , where he moved up to the first team in 1970. There he celebrated his debut in Divizia A on August 30, 1970 against CFR Cluj . After descending end of the season returned to Sportul Sandu back, which in Divizia B played.

At Sportul, Sandu immediately became a regular player and contributed 15 goals to the fact that in 1971 he was promoted to Divizia A and returned after 30 years. He remained loyal to Sportul for a total of 15 years and scored his goals regularly. His most successful season was the 1975/76 season with 21 goals. Sportul belonged to the top midfield of the Romanian league during this time - apart from the years after the promotion. Sandu failed to win a title with Sportul. The best results were two third places in the 1982/83 and 1984/85 seasons and the 1985/86 runner-up .

After this success Sandu left Sportul and moved to Gloria Buzau , where he ended his career in 1987 after playing five games due to injury.

National team

Sandu played a total of 18 games for the Romanian national football team , scoring six goals. He made his debut on April 8, 1972 against France . During this time Romania did not qualify for either the World or European Championships .

Career as a functionary

After the end of his active career, Sandu was responsible for the children's and youth division of the Romanian Football Association from 1987 to 1989 and took on administrative tasks at Sportul Studențesc. In February 1990 he was elected General Secretary of the Romanian Football Association and in August 1990 succeeded Mircea Pascu as President of the Association. Since January 26, 2007, he has also been a member of the UEFA Executive Committee . On March 25, 2008, Sandu was awarded the "Meritul sportiv" III order of merit by the Romanian President Traian Băsescu for the qualification of the national team for the European Football Championship 2008 . Class excellent. He is an Honored Master of Sports. On March 5, 2014, 29-year-old Răzvan Burleanu replaced Sandu at the head of the association.

Mircea Sandu was first married to the handball player Simona Arghir (1948-1995). From this marriage came a son and a daughter, the former tennis player Raluca Sandu (* 1980). Sandu is now married to Lisa for the second time. In the fall of 2009, it was announced that Sandu had cancer.
