Silviu Ploeşteanu (born January 28, 1913 in Craiova , Dolj district , † April 13, 1969 ) was a Romanian football player and coach . He denied 169 games in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A .

Career as a player

Ploeşteanu began his career in 1930 at UDR Reşița and won the Romanian championship in the first year . The following year he reached the final again, where his team was defeated by Venus Bucharest .

Despite these successes, UDR was not one of the founding members of the Romanian professional league Divizia A , so Ploeşteanu joined Universitatea Cluj in 1932 . After the runner-up in 1932/33 he could no longer build on earlier successes with "U Cluj" and in 1937 he moved to Venus Bucharest, one of the best Romanian clubs of the 1930s. With Venus, Ploeşteanu became Romanian champions in 1938 and 1939 . The dominance was then abruptly ended with the outbreak of the Second World War and the associated interruption of gaming operations in 1941. After the end of the war he ended his career in 1946, which he revived for a year (1948/49) as a player-coach of UA Brașov .

National team

Ploeşteanu played eleven games for the Romanian national soccer team between 1937 and 1941 and scored one goal. He made his debut on July 8, 1937 against Lithuania .

Career as a coach

After the end of his active career, Ploeşteanu was initially in the 1948/49 season as player-coach of UA Braşov (later Steagul Roşu Braşov), but then concentrated entirely on his task on the sidelines. In Brașov he was promoted to Divizia A in 1956 . In the 1959/60 season he achieved the greatest success in the club's history with the runner-up behind CCA Bucharest .

Due to the success in the club, the Romanian Football Association became aware of Ploeşteanu and hired him in 1962 as national coach . On December 23, 1962, he sat on the bench for the first time in the international match against Morocco . Ploeşteanu looked after Romania in 18 games, of which eleven could be won. He succeeded in qualifying for the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo , where Romania was able to achieve the best placement in a world championship with 5th place. After the tournament he was replaced by Ilie Oana .

Ploeşteanu returned to Steagul Roşu and coached the club until March 1968 when he was dismissed in view of the impending relegation . From 1968 until his death a year later he oversaw Tractorul Brasov in Divizia C .
