Gheorghe "Ghiță" Albu (born November 18, 1909 in Arad , Austria-Hungary , † June 26, 1974 ) was a Romanian football player and coach . He played 137 games in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A , and took part in the 1934 World Cup.

Career as a player

Gheorghe Albu began his career in 1924 in his hometown of Arad at AMEF Arad , from where he moved to the then Romanian runner-up Jiul Lupeni in 1928 . At that time he still took part in the Arad district championship , which was playfully high , but was unable to qualify for the final round of the Romanian championship in 1928/29 . In the 1929/30 season Jiul Lupeni moved to the district championship of Oltenia , where he was athletically superior to Oltul Slatina and the teams from Craiova , but saw himself exposed to massive hostility and therefore withdrew from the championship in the spring of 1930. Albu then moved back to Arad and played for Gloria CFR Arad , with whom he immediately qualified for the final of the 1929/30 season. After founding the Romanian professional league, Divizia A , in 1932 he stayed at Gloria CFR for a year before he joined the Romanian top club Venus Bucharest in 1933 . With Venus he won the Romanian championship four times, but was used only once in the 1939/40 season , so that in 1940 he moved to the league rivals FC Craiova . Albu ended his career here in 1944.

National team

Albu was used in a total of 42 games for the Romanian national soccer team, but without scoring a goal. His first game took place on May 10, 1931 against Bulgaria . At the Football World Cup in Italy in 1934 , Albu was used in Romania's only game against Czechoslovakia . He wore the captain's armband of the Romanian national team in 16 international matches.

Career as a coach

Albu began working as a coach at his ex-club FC Craiova in 1947. Engagements at Textila Sfântu Gheorghe , Foresta Fălticeni , Dermata Cluj , UTA Arad and Chimia Făgăraş followed by 1959 . Between 1959 and 1962 he coached AMEF Arad, the club where he started his playing career. He then looked after Vagonul Arad for two seasons before settling in Făgăraş in 1964 to work there as a youth coach at Chimia until his retirement.
