Christoph Daum at Lambertz Monday Night in February 2016.

Christoph Paul Daum (born October 24, 1953 in Zwickau ) is a German football coach who coached various clubs in the Bundesliga and other European countries from the mid-1980s to 2014. From 2016 to September 14, 2017 he was the coach of the Romanian national team .

childhood and education

Daum was born in Zwickau and first grew up with his grandparents in Oelsnitz in the Ore Mountains . At the age of six, after the death of his father, he moved to live with his mother in Duisburg . He studied sports science at the German Sport University Cologne . His diploma thesis is entitled The importance and importance of educational and psychological measures of a football coach .

Career as a football player

As a teenager, Daum played for the district clubs DJK Viktoria Beeck, VfvB Ruhrort-Laar and Hamborn 07 . From 1971 he also played for Hamborn 07 in the men's division, moved to Eintracht Duisburg in 1972 , played during his studies at the teachers' gymnastics club in Duisburg and from 1975 at 1. FC Köln, where he played in the major league for their amateurs and became German amateur champion in 1981 .

Career as a coach

At the end of his active career, he acquired a license as a football teacher at the DFB in 1979/80 . To date, Daum has sat on the bench in over 900 competitive games as the coach of a professional club, 473 of them in Germany, 306 in Turkey, 40 in Austria. In international competitions ( Champions League , Europa League ), Daum participated with clubs from each of the three countries a total of 81 times.

1. FC Cologne

In the 1985/86 season he was promoted to assistant coach and in September 1986 to head coach of the Bundesliga team of 1. FC Cologne. Daum took over the club in the relegation place 16 and led it in the season 1986/87 still in place ten. In the following season 1987/88 Daum succeeded with the team strengthened by a few newcomers like Pierre Littbarski and Jürgen Kohler the jump to third place and thus the entry into the UEFA Cup. In the 1988/89 season 1. FC Köln improved further and became runner-up. In the UEFA Cup, they lost in the round of 16 against Real Sociedad San Sebastián . Then Daum and the team again secured second place in the 1989/90 Bundesliga behind FC Bayern. In the UEFA Cup he reached the semi-finals with 1. FC Köln and was eliminated by Juventus Turin .

During the World Cup in 1990 Daum was dismissed by the then President Dietmar Artzinger-Bolten . No reason for the dismissal was given by the association.

VfB Stuttgart

In November 1990 Daum became a coach at VfB Stuttgart . Daum took over the team in 15th place just before the relegation places and led it in the 1990/91 season still in sixth place, which meant qualifying for the UEFA Cup. In the 1991/92 season Daum formed a top team around Eike Immel , Guido Buchwald , Maurizio Gaudino , Matthias Sammer and Fritz Walter , who fought for the championship title with Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund . On the last day of the match, VfB Stuttgart won 2-1 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen with a goal from Buchwald in the 86th minute , thus securing the German championship. In the UEFA Cup, Daum's team were eliminated in the second round against CA Osasuna .

In August 1992, VfB Stuttgart and Daum won the Supercup with a 3-1 win against cup winners Hannover 96 . In the Bundesliga, the team ended up in seventh place. In addition, Daum made a mistake in the first round of the Champions League in the game against Leeds United on September 30, 1992 when he illegally replaced a fourth foreigner. The game was rated 3-0 instead of 4-1 after a protest by Leeds United. Since VfB had won the first leg 3-0, a play-off was scheduled on neutral ground and Stuttgart were eliminated in the first round of the UEFA Champions League after losing at the almost empty Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona . VfB thus missed participation in the newly created group games.

After another weak first half of the season, the team was only in 13th place in December 1993. Daum had to leave the club during the 1993/94 winter break.

Beşiktaş Istanbul

From January 1994 Daum worked for the Turkish football club Beşiktaş Istanbul . In his first year he won the Turkish Cup and shortly afterwards the Super Cup, both in the final against Galatasaray Istanbul . Beşiktaş finished fourth in the Turkish league. In the following season Daum was with Beşiktaş for the first time Turkish champions , but lost in the final of the Super Cup against cup winners Trabzonspor . In the European Cup Winners' Cup, the team was eliminated in the second round against AJ Auxerre . In the 1995/96 season Beşiktaş missed the group stage of the Champions League by a defeat in qualification against the Norwegian representative Rosenborg Trondheim and finished the Süper Lig in third place.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

Bayer 04 Leverkusen brought him back to the Bundesliga in the summer of 1996. In the first season, Daum was runner-up straight away and was awarded the coach fuxx by the sports show ran in 1996 and was voted coach of the season by Premiere . In the following seasons there were two more runner-up championships and a third place. At the beginning of his fifth season, Daum was fired for cocaine use .

Beşiktaş, FK Austria Wien and Fenerbahçe

Daum moved again to Beşiktaş Istanbul (March 2001 to May 2002) and then to FK Austria Wien (October 2002 to June 2003). There he won the Austrian championship and was Austrian cup winner . From July 1, 2003 Daum worked again in Turkey as head coach at Fenerbahçe Istanbul , with whom he was again Turkish champions in 2004 and 2005 . At the end of the 2005/06 season, Daum resigned for health reasons.

Renewed engagements at 1. FC Köln and Fenerbahçe

On November 27, 2006, Daum was the second time coach of 1. FC Cologne, with whom he was promoted to the 1st Bundesliga in May 2008. Although Daum's contract ran until 2010, it contained a special termination clause for the end of the 2008/09 season, which Daum made use of on May 31, 2009 and left the club on June 30, 2009.

From July 2009 Daum was again coach at Fenerbahçe. He saw a greater challenge in playing internationally and overall better opportunities than at 1. FC Köln. On June 25, 2010, Daum and the association agreed on an early termination of the contract.

Eintracht Frankfurt

On March 23, 2011 Daum was coach of the Bundesliga team of Eintracht Frankfurt . He took over the post from Michael Skibbe , who was in acute danger of relegation with the team in the second half of the 2010/11 Bundesliga season . At the end of the season, the team was relegated after having remained without a win under Daum in seven remaining games. On May 16, 2011, Daum resigned as a coach.

Club Bruges

On November 9, 2011 Daum became the new coach of Club Bruges . He followed the Dutchman Adrie Koster , who had to vacate his post after four defeats in a row. Daum led the club to second place in the league at the end of the season; associated with this was a place in the qualifying round for the Champions League. In May 2012, he asked for personal reasons to terminate his contract, as his family continued to live in Cologne and he found the spatial separation very stressful.

Bursaspor

On August 14, 2013 Daum signed a two-year contract with the Turkish first division club Bursaspor Kulübü. At Bursaspor there was several controversy about the person Daum. For example, Pablo Batalla, a long-standing top performer , left the club in the first half of the 2013/14 season on the grounds that he did not want to play under Daum. Other players like Sebastián Pinto also complained about Daum's leadership style. After his club came dangerously close to the relegation zone due to the 2-1 home defeat against Konyaspor , Daum was sacked on March 23, 2014.

Romanian national team

From July 7, 2016 to September 14, 2017, Daum was the coach of the Romanian national team and led the team in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup . When a qualification was no longer possible after a 0-1 defeat against Montenegro in the third last round match, Daum agreed with the association to terminate the contract.

Others

motivation

Christoph Daum became known as a motivator through two measures in particular:

  • In the 1988/89 season, Daum stuck 40,000 D-Marks on the cabin door in order to visually illustrate the possible championship bonus to his players . His team won the following game 3-1.
  • At Bayer 04 Leverkusen , Daum ran over broken glass with his players. He wanted to make it clear that "intellectual powers" also play a decisive role in football.

engagement

Since 1990 Daum has been involved in the football fan club for the blind and visually impaired e. V. "Sight dogs". He also supports the Turkish children's cancer aid Bizim Lösemili Cocuklar Vakfi and the Gazi Children's Foundation.

Daum is the sponsor of the project School without Racism - School with Courage and supported the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium in Hürth with an action.

He also worked as an assistant coach at the 2006 World Cup for people with disabilities in Germany.

After Daum had made misleading statements about lesbians and gays in a DSF documentary , he met the first gay and lesbian fan club of 1. FC Köln "Andersrum-rut-wiess" for a discussion and supported the group draw for the 15th. Come-Together-Cup at Radio Cologne .

Since 2014, Daum has been involved in diabetesDE - German Diabetes Aid in matters of diabetes education and is a volunteer trainer for FC Diabetologie , a team of doctors, scientists, diabetes advisors and people with diabetes, who mainly fight against political teams to raise diabetes on the political level Bring agenda.

Cocaine affair

In one of the biggest scandals in the history of German football Christoph Daum was then coach of Bayer 04 Leverkusen and designated national coach of the German national football team , in October 2000, the consumption of cocaine detected. The affair was initiated by an interview that Uli Hoeneß gave to the Munich tabloid Abendzeitung in autumn 2000. "The DFB can't start a ' Don't take drugs ' campaign and Herr Daum may have something to do with it," said Hoeneß. In this context, the words "sniffy thumb" were also used. Daum, who had initially filed a defamation suit against Hoeneß and publicly asserted his innocence several times, was finally forced, under increasing public pressure, to allow a forensic analysis of a sample of his hair for drug residues. At a press conference previously called on October 9, 2000, Daum explained this voluntary hair test and said:

"I do this because I have an absolutely clear conscience."

- Christoph Daum

The positive result of the Institute for Forensic Medicine at the University of Cologne exposed Daum as a liar. After the result of the hair analysis was communicated to him on October 20, 2000 and cocaine consumption was proven, Daum was dismissed as club coach without notice, and his contract as national coach of the German national soccer team, which had been running from June 1, 2001, was terminated by the DFB.

Daum then left Germany and spent two and a half months in Florida . On January 12, 2001, one day after his return to Germany, Daum first admitted cocaine use at a press conference in Cologne. He took this "occasionally in the private sector". But there could be no question of addiction or disease. In the meantime, he has "no longer had contact with drugs" and no longer uses cocaine, said Daum. He did not want to call his behavior a minor offense and was "aware of the scope of the mistake".

During his trip to the USA, Daum found that he had not flown to the USA to escape, but to gain distance. He tried to come to terms with himself and has now drawn a line. "I am ready to take responsibility, my behavior was wrong". The later legal proceedings before the Koblenz regional court for acquiring and inciting to trade in cocaine against Daum were discontinued subject to the payment of a sum of 10,000 euros.

Private

Daum is married for the second time, has four children and lives with his second wife Angelica Camm-Daum in Cologne-Hahnwald . The wedding of his second marriage took place in September 2007 in the center circle of the Cologne Rheinenergiestadion when Daum was the head coach of 1. FC Cologne. After five years at Eintracht Frankfurt, his son Marcel Daum has been supporting Bayer 04 Leverkusen as assistant coach analysis since the 2018/19 season by assisting the coaching staff with analysis via video material in preparation for past and upcoming games; this also with running games.

In August 2011, it became known that Daum was suffering from skin cancer . According to his own statements, he overcome the disease after a few operations.
