Eike Immel (born November 27, 1960 in Erksdorf , today a district of Stadtallendorf ) is a former German football player . The goalkeeper was a national player at the 1982 and 1986 World Championships and the 1980 and 1988 European Championships .

Career as a player

At the age of 15 Immel left his youth team TSV Eintracht Stadtallendorf and switched to the youth department of Borussia Dortmund . Immel made his debut for the professional team of Borussia Dortmund on August 12, 1978 (1st matchday of the 1978/79 Bundesliga season ) as a 17-year-old in a 1-0 win against FC Bayern Munich .

In 1986 he moved from Borussia Dortmund, for which he had played a total of 247 Bundesliga games, as number three of the senior national team to VfB Stuttgart . In the 1991/92 season , Immel celebrated his greatest success by winning the German championship .

In the 1995/96 season , his coach Rolf Fringer gave preference to the young goalkeeper Marc Ziegler . Immel therefore decided to leave VfB and moved to the Premier League at Manchester City .

Immel played 534 Bundesliga games, making it seventh on the list of record players in the Bundesliga . He played 287 games for VfB Stuttgart. Of the goalkeepers, only Oliver Kahn has played more league games. He is the Bundesliga goalkeeper with the most goals conceded: a total of 829. After “zero” games, Immel is third with 148 games without conceding a goal, behind Oliver Kahn and Oliver Reck .

He had to end his career in England because of a hip problem.

National team

Immel completed internationals for the youth teams of the DFB from 1975 to 1978 and on November 8, 1978 an international match for the amateur national team , which was defeated by the Netherlands 0-2 in The Hague .

Immel was a junior selection player and was runner-up at the U-21 European Championship in 1982 .

On October 11, 1980, at the age of 19, he was the youngest goalkeeper ever to appear for a German national soccer team. The 1-1 draw in Eindhoven against the Netherlands was his debut. He was in the German squad at the European Championships in 1980 and 1988 and the World Championships in 1982 and 1986 , and he played through the 1988 European Championship as a regular goalkeeper. By 1988 Immel was in the goal of the German national team a total of 19 times, but turned his back on her after a dispute with team boss Franz Beckenbauer , who had preferred the young Bodo Illgner in the first qualifying game for the 1990 World Cup against Finland .

Immel was awarded the silver bay leaf for winning the European title in 1980 .

Career as a coach

Eike Immel began his coaching career with the Württemberg league club VfR Heilbronn , with whom he rose to the top league of Baden-Württemberg in 1999 as runner-up behind SpVgg Au / Iller . In March 2001 he moved to Turkey, first to Beşiktaş Istanbul , where he worked as a goalkeeping coach (as in the following stations) under Christoph Daum . After his resignation in May 2002, he moved to FK Austria Wien in October 2002 , before he worked for the Turkish record champions Fenerbahçe Istanbul between July 2003 and December 2005 and trained Volkan Demirel . However, since Immel was diagnosed with femoral head necrosis , he can no longer pursue his job as a goalkeeper coach. Immel has been training Eintracht Stadtallendorf's second team in the district league A Marburg since summer 2019 .

Football schools

In 2008, Eike Immel founded the Eike Immel goal keeper school in Kassel . According to media reports, however, this project "fell asleep" again in 2009. The 'Eike Immel Football School' opened in Frankfurt in April 2013, but has since been closed again.

Television appearances

From January 11th to January 24th, 2008 Eike Immel took part in the third season of the RTL show “ I'm a star - get me out of here! "In which he finished 5th. In 2008, Eike Immel also appeared at The Perfect Celebrity Dinner , Schmidt & Pocher and Nachtcafé . Immel was a guest on the television show Markus Lanz three times . In the broadcast on February 8, 2012, he stated that he had had less than 20% vision in his left eye since he was born. Spatial vision has been practiced since early childhood, although "the first time he tried to hit a glass of water with his finger, he would certainly not make it". On June 13, 2012, he discussed the European Championship game Germany against the Netherlands. His third visit was on September 11, 2014. On December 2, 2014, he was a guest on the show Menschen bei Maischberger . In 2015, he fought along with 26 other candidates on the show I'm a Star - Let me back in! for a place in the jungle camp 2016.

Music recordings

Together with his jungle colleague Bata Illic , Immel recorded the single Wie ein Liebeslied , which was released on February 29, 2008.

On June 26th, 2009 his solo album Meine Andere Seiten was released .

Private

Immel comes from a farming family. He is the father of a daughter and a son. In 1988 he supported the election campaign of Lothar Späth ( CDU ) in Baden-Württemberg.

Eike Immel is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Youth Football Foundation. The Youth Football Foundation was founded in 2000 by Jürgen Klinsmann , other successful national players and the lecturers of the football teacher special course.

In April 2008, Immel had to file for personal bankruptcy because he had borne himself financially through many years of high consumer spending and building owner models had ended in total loss.

Since 2016 he has been living in his old home in Stadtallendorf again. His old club TSV Eintracht Stadtallendorf noticed him and supported him on his return. Immel is involved in youth work with the Hessian fifth division team.
