Illic was born the son of a tax clerk. After graduating from school, he studied philology , English and Italian and then worked as a teacher for two years. During this time he met the musician Andreas Triphan, who founded a band with him (mostly as "Bata Illic & Band", individual appearances as "Kommando Iffets") and supported them as a drummer and financial sponsor. They parted ways in 1961. Andreas Triphan saw the group's perspective in France . Illic did not want to follow him to Lille for several months .
After performing at the American embassy in Belgrade, Illic and his band “Grandpa's Whites” got a guest performance contract for several months for the American club “Twister” in Bad Kissingen in 1963 . Further commitments for clubs in Bad Hersfeld , Poppenburg , Fulda and West Berlin followed. In May 1966, Triphan and Illic happened to meet again at a small music festival in Bern . Although they had a few appearances together in southern Germany from June to August, both could no longer imagine working together on a joint project for longer.
In 1967 Illic recorded his first record. His first hit titles in the charts were in 1968 Blindfolded and Shoes as Heavy as a Stone . In 1972 he had his greatest success with Michaela . He appeared in numerous music programs, including in the ZDF hit parade , and presented Michaela and the subsequent single as long as I live in the 1973 film Blue Blooms the Gentian . The following years were also very successful for him as a pop singer. At the beginning of the 1980s things got a little quieter around him.
In the 1990s, Illic attempted a comeback. He still appears on radio and television today, preferably with songs by Aznavour , Celentano or Bacharach in German-language versions. But he also sings his old hits at these gigs. From January 11, 2008 to January 26, 2008 the pop singer was in the show Ich bin ein Star - Get me out of here! to be seen on RTL. He took third place on the reality show behind Michaela Schaffrath and the winner Ross Antony .
On February 7, 2008, the retro POP single Tschewaptschitschi was released as a download track. The first single from an album recorded in 2008 is the duet Wie ein Liebeslied , which Bata Illic recorded together with his jungle colleague Eike Immel . Bata Illic thus reached the top 20 of the German single charts, for the first time in 33 years. The maxi CD and a more recent album called Herzgeschichten (Heart Stories ), not belonging to the single , were released on February 29, 2008, the official new album - like the single also titled Like a Love Song - followed on March 7, 2008.
