I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! ( IBES for short , often referred to as jungle camp ) is a reality show that RTL has broadcast 14 seasons since 2004. Model is from the United Kingdom originating television format I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!

Ten to twelve people, who have usually already appeared on television, live for up to two weeks in a so-called jungle camp in Australia under constant surveillance by television cameras, similar to the Big Brother format . The aim of the participants is to win the favor of the audience and to stay in the camp for as long as possible in order to be elected as the winner of the jungle queen or jungle king . Since season 13 (2019), the winner has also received a prize of 100,000 euros. The title of the program refers to an exclamation with which the participants can cancel so-called jungle tests or even exit the program directly. The cost of producing I'm a Star - Get Me Out of Here! amount to an estimated 30 million euros per year.

In the summer of 2015, the title I am a star - Let me in again! produced an offshoot of the show. The winner Brigitte Nielsen qualified for the following season of the original show.

Since 2018, the events of the show have been discussed in the format I am a Star - The Hour After , moderated by Angela Finger-Erben .

Idol

The show is based on the British format I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! of the broadcaster ITV . The British show is hosted by the British duo Ant & Dec ( Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly ). The show concept was also sold to other countries. The US version ran on ABC and was presented by John Lehr in the first season and Myleene Klass and Damien Fahey in the second season .

The German version of the show ran at irregular intervals from 2004 and has been broadcast annually from mid-January since 2011. Sonja Zietlow and Dirk Bach moderated until the sixth season . After Bach's death, Daniel Hartwich became the second presenter from the seventh season (2013) . The moderation texts will be written by Micky Beisenherz and Zietlow's husband Jens Oliver Haas . In the German and English versions of the show, the paramedic Bob McCarron alias Dr. Bob and his three assistants are in charge. Life in the camp is continuously monitored by cameras. Remarkable scenes are shown every evening in a television broadcast, mostly accompanied by humorous remarks by the moderator duo, who also ironically comment on the level of awareness of the participants.

A so-called cooperation agreement exists between the participants and the production company. This includes a fee and an expense allowance for participation, which usually fluctuates depending on the level of awareness. In individual cases the amount can differ significantly. The amount is paid in four installments: when the contract is signed, before moving into the warehouse, after the finale and two weeks after the last episode is broadcast. Up to this point there is an exclusive agreement between the participant and RTL. One of the contractual penalties is the forfeiture of the last two installments for those who decide to leave the warehouse earlier. On the other hand, there is a risk of a fine of 30,000 euros if an ex-candidate reveals internals to the media during production. In addition, the participants are in the public eye, which means that the candidates are hoping for greater awareness and new engagements. In preparation, the candidates receive the programs of the previous seasons on DVD. In addition, a medical and psychological examination takes place before moving into the camp. If necessary, a medical contact person is available to candidates during their stay in Australia. If a participant is thinking of leaving the camp, there will be discussions on how to overcome such a crisis.

The show is produced on a former farm in Dungay, New South Wales , near Murwillumbah . The leaseholder of the site is the British production company Independent Television , formerly Granada Television, which extensively redesigned and built on the previously open site and equipped it with camera and sound technology. During the filming in particular, the area is shielded by military uniformed guards. Depending on the information, between 150 and 400 employees are involved in production. The production of a season costs RTL around 30 million euros. Since Murwillumbah belongs to the AEST time zone (UTC + 10), it will be early morning there when the broadcast in Germany begins.

From the second to the fourth season, RTL broadcast a four-hour special program every Saturday and Sunday in the afternoon with a lot of background information, summaries of the day and films that were not shown in the main show. Was moderated I'm a Celebrity - Get Me Out of Here! - Special by Markus Lanz (second season), Leonard Diepenbrock (third season) and Daniel Hartwich (fourth season). In each of the first three seasons, one week after the final broadcast, I'm a Star - Get Me Out of Here! - The big reunion broadcast, with all participants as guests and Frauke Ludowig as the presenter. Since the fourth season there has been a reunion of all candidates in the tree house one day after the finale. Here Sonja Zietlow and Dirk Bach and Daniel Hartwich took over the moderation.

Jungle exams

One candidate, sometimes two or rarely more than one candidate, has to pass a task every day. These tests usually consist of overcoming scary or repulsive situations, for example by preparing smaller animals or parts of animals (e.g. testicles), or eating them dead or alive. In addition, in most exams, candidates are awarded B. grubs, beetles and spiders showered or otherwise confronted with them. Since 2020, RTL and the production company have refrained from eating live animals as part of a jungle test. ITV had previously done this in the 2019 season of the British version of the format. Other tests are dexterity exercises that must be carried out safely at great heights, above or below water. The candidate must collect red or yellow stars during the exam. For each star collected, there is a food ration for the camp residents. The number of stars that can be earned usually corresponds to the current number of camp residents. Every task can be canceled with the exclamation “I am a star - get me out of here!”, Whereby the candidate loses the stars earned. According to the broadcaster, the basic supply is only guaranteed by 70 grams of rice and beans per person and day. In the first half of the season, the examinee is chosen by the audience by phone or SMS , in the second half and sometimes on the first day, the participants decide by secret ballot. On the last day, all 3 finalists have to take part in a jungle test you can earn 5 stars for the last dinner. The first three stars stand for one dish of the course for which the candidate is competing (starters, main dishes or desserts), the fourth for their own drink, and the fifth for a personal “goodie” (for example an additional drink).

In seasons 10 and 11, the candidates temporarily competed in two teams; only the winning team received the food rations they won. In season 12 there were exams for the first time in which the candidate or candidates could only earn all or no star.

Treasure hunt

On some days a treasure chest is hidden in the forest that the candidates have to recover. The candidates usually go on a treasure hunt in pairs, solve a task and bring the treasure chest to the camp. There the chest is opened, in which there is usually a quiz question with two possible answers. If the candidates answer the task correctly, there is a prize such as candy, beer or spices; if they answer incorrectly, there is a useless consolation prize, for example a CD. Less often there is a win immediately after solving the task, for example with the task “The dark cave”. Candidates have to keep an hourglass running in a dark cave until the next morning.

Jungle king

Depending on the number of participants, a candidate who has to leave the warehouse will be determined by telephone vote every day from a certain day of the relay . Since the candidates can only be supported by telephone voting but cannot be voted out of office directly, the candidate who can get the fewest viewer votes has to leave. If candidates leave the camp voluntarily, they will not be selected for the corresponding number of days. After two weeks there is the finale at the end of the season, in which two of the last three remaining candidates fall out. The last person remaining is referred to by RTL as the jungle king or jungle queen.

Season 4

The fourth season aired from January 9 to January 24, 2009. Before RTL officially confirmed the celebrities of the show, the broadcaster took the liberty of making a joke on the website by using Thomas Gottschalk , Angelina Jolie and Pamela Anderson as placeholders for the candidates actually taking part.

The then 78-year-old actress Ingrid van Bergen prevailed on January 24th in the final against Lorielle London and Nico Schwanz and was thus elected jungle queen.

As in the third season, the fourth season finale was held parallel to the ZDF show Wetten, dass ..? broadcast. Despite the strong competition, the last edition of the fourth season was able to reach 7.17 million people in total and 4.63 million viewers relevant for advertising (37.5 percent market share). An average of 5.75 million viewers followed the fourth season.

Season 5

Although Dirk Bach announced it in the last episode of the fourth season, the 2010 jungle camp was canceled on June 11, 2009 due to low advertising bookings, which had already appeared in 2009 in the form of advertising blocks that were disproportionately short for the reach.

The fifth season aired January 14-29, 2011. For the first time there were eleven candidates. Sarah Knappik left the camp on January 25, 2011 after five candidates had threatened to leave the camp if they were to remain in the camp. Peer Kusmagk was chosen as the winner of the season and won the final against Katy Karrenbauer and Thomas Rupprath.

The season finale and the eleventh and twelfth editions, which dealt with the escalating dispute over Sarah Knappik and her subsequent voluntary move, achieved the highest market shares . The eleventh program on January 24, 2011 saw an average of 8.66 million viewers aged 3 and over, with a market share of 47.5 percent in the target group. The program Extra - Das RTL-Magazin , which was shown afterwards and which also dealt with the events in the jungle camp, had an even higher market share in the target group at 49.7 percent. The twelfth show on January 25, 2011, which was extended to 1:45 hours, achieved the highest market share of the season with 50.3 percent in the target group; only the finale of the first season achieved an even higher rate (54.1 percent). The final on January 29, 2011 saw an average of 8.93 million people, making it the episode with the highest number of viewers of all seasons.

Season 6

The sixth season aired January 13-28, 2012. The title track was a modified version of the song Wildes Ding by Culcha Candela . Actress Brigitte Nielsen received a fee of 150,000 euros for her participation and was thus the highest-earning candidate in the history of the format; according to media reports, the remaining candidates received between 30,000 and 60,000 euros.

After three days of continuous rain in large parts of Eastern Australia during the second week of broadcasting, access roads and bridges to the camp were so flooded that the production team as well as the moderators and candidates were cut off from the outside world. RTL announced that u. a. consider canceling the shipment. From January 27th, the camp could be reached again via detours. Since the jungle test prepared for January 25 could not have taken place due to the circumstances, it was replaced by a less complex challenge directly in the camp. The January 27 jungle exam was moved to the moderators' tree house for the same reasons.

Furthermore, candidate Vincent Raven caused a sensation with critical remarks about women in management positions.

On January 28, 2012 Brigitte Nielsen , Kim Gloss and Rocco Stark were in the final, of which the former was elected jungle queen.

Season 7

The seventh season aired January 11-26, 2013. After the death of the presenter Dirk Bach in early October 2012, it was unclear until the end of November whether the program would be continued; then RTL confirmed the planning with Daniel Hartwich and Sonja Zietlow as moderators and again eleven participants. In addition to the daily television broadcast, the previous evening on the sister station RTL Nitro, for the first time, there was a television magazine entitled I am a star - get me out of here! The magazine moderated by Sunny Bansemer . In this, the events were discussed with former camp residents and news from Australia was reported via direct link.

In contrast to the first six seasons, six people moved into the camp a day earlier than the others.

On the first day the residents had to put out the campfire just a few hours after it was lit for the first time in the history of the show until further notice. Because of the high risk of forest fires as a result of the prevailing heat, the local administration had banned open fires. The residents got a gas stove as a replacement. A few days later the fire was allowed to be kindled again.

Due to his health and the announced heat wave, Helmut Berger had to leave the camp on January 12th on the advice of medical supervisor Bob McCarron . Klaus Baumgart moved in as a replacement in the same episode. For the first time there was a candidate for replacement and a total of twelve participants.

On January 26th, Joey Heindle was elected Jungle King 2013 with 53.21 percent of the audience vote.

In the advertising-relevant target group of 14 to 49 year olds, an average market share of 41.6 percent was achieved with 4.35 million people. In the target group, the seventh season was the most successful season to date.

In the target group of 14- to 49-year-olds, with a market share of 43.1 percent in episode 4, the peak value of the 6th season was overtaken and the season record was set with 49.4 percent in the finale (episode 16).

Season 8

The broadcast of the eighth season began on January 17, 2014 with the arrival of the eleven new participants. The moderators were again Sonja Zietlow and Daniel Hartwich. The finale aired on February 1st; the season ended with the big reunion on February 2nd. Two weeks later, on February 16, 2014, there was an additional program entitled Welcome Home and Frauke Ludowig as the presenter.

Michael Wendler , who voluntarily left the camp on January 20th after four days, was the first candidate in the history of the show to then express his will to reverse this decision and move back into the camp. However, a new move was refused by production.

On January 24, 2014, Larissa Marolt took the jungle test for the eighth time in a row, setting a new international record in the broadcast format. In total, she had to pass ten jungle exams, which has not yet been exceeded by any other participant in all global editions.

With an average of 7.95 million viewers, the season was the most successful at the time it was broadcast.

On February 2, Melanie Müller was elected Jungle Queen 2014 with 60.14 percent of the audience votes.

The finale aired on January 31; the season ended with the big reunion on February 1st. Two weeks later, on February 15, 2015, there was another additional program entitled Welcome Home.

Five candidates moved to the camp a day earlier than the others. The remaining six candidates spent the first night on a nearby island before moving into camp.

On January 31, RTL announced that the contract with Benjamin Boyce had been terminated and that Benjamin Boyce would not participate in any further appointments, such as the big reunion.

In contrast to previous seasons, the ninth season was criticized for being not very entertaining. The BZ from Berlin therefore stopped its daily reporting.

In the first days, the candidates were accommodated in two partial camps and the jungle tests were carried out as a duel between one participant from the two teams. Those who earned the most stars at the end of the test received a food ration for their team for each star collected. The loser's team only got rice and beans to eat.

The tenth season theme song was Hey Everybody! by the Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer .

Season 13

In an interview with the media magazine DWDL.de in February 2018, Markus Küttner, RTL division manager for Real Life & Comedy, said that the jungle camp should also be produced in 2019. In 2019, RTL broadcast the aftershow The Hour After for the first time on Saturdays and Sundays following the main broadcast , in which the events from the camp were discussed. Previously, the format ran exclusively on RTLPlus .

On January 18, Gisele Oppermann took part in a jungle test for the ninth time in a row, breaking Larissa Marolt's record from the eighth season .

On January 24th, a novelty occurred in the series: On the 14th day, none of the participants had to leave the jungle camp for the first time unplanned. The cause was a technical glitch when evaluating the voting results. As a result, the following day, for the first time, three participants had to go on one day. At the beginning of the broadcast, the participant was announced in the camp who should have left the day before, at the end of the broadcast the planned two other participants were fetched from the camp.

The theme music of the format used since the first season is identical to the theme music of the British model. It was composed by Grant Buckerfield and was released in 2004 as a bonus track on maxi CDs with songs by the participants for the English and German markets.

A maxi-CD was released for each of the first three seasons, on which some participants of the respective season sang a song together. An album was also released for the second season, on which the participants also sang a song alone. Most of the songs were covers of well-known hits with new lyrics. The title song of the third season Dschungelwahnsinn by Achim Petry feat. Jungle Allstars - a cover version of Wolfgang Petrys Wahnsinn  - was not heard on the show itself. For the fourth and fifth season, Maxi-CDs of the Zipfelbuben were released with the participation of some of the camp participants. In the sixth season there was a song called Wildes Ding , which was shown on the final day with an appearance on the show. Since the seventh season there has been a theme song that is regularly recorded in the programs as a transition to the commercial breaks.

As part of the 14th season, RTL published the title “I play piano”, sung by Thorsten Legat as “DJ Kafkasalla”.

criticism

The format was heavily criticized, especially during the first season. Media scholars, representatives from politics and the church and other prominent figures saw the candidates' human dignity being violated (see also “ Disgust TV ”). The first season was submitted for examination by the state media authorities of the Commission for Youth Media Protection (KJM). This did not find the program harmful to minors, but saw a violation of youth protection regulations if future programs would contain even tougher jungle tests or even more malice on the part of the moderators. The Federation against Abuse of Animals also protested against the program, as animals were unnecessarily killed or put into stressful situations. The animal welfare organization PETA criticized the fact that it provoked a desensitization of viewers in dealing with animals. It was also criticized that the production site was not accessible to independent observers. A groomed area is simulated as a jungle to the television viewer. The psychiatrist Mario Gmür said in the FAZ that the program announces a “regressive infantile constitution”. The sadistic is no longer socially ostracized and the audience wants to be there at the birth and execution of heroes. The former FDP member of the state parliament Dietrich von Gumppenberg filed a criminal complaint against RTL on suspicion of committed bodily harm and a criminal offense against the animal protection law. Potential advertisers such as IBM , Deutsche Bahn or Wüstenrot also avoided the format despite the high ratings. “What RTL does is only aimed at bad taste. This is trash and no longer the program of a market leader ”, said Christof Baron, managing director of the media agency Mindshare .

After the success of the first season, the public perception of the jungle show increasingly changed. Their bizarre game content and the irony with which the participants and their respective level of awareness are portrayed have now increasingly received positive criticism. The media magazine DWDL described the program as “really well done television. You can literally notice the extraordinary attention to detail with which this show is made. "The media journalist Stefan Niggemeier wrote:" Part of the secret of the overwhelming success [...] is that the show not only appeals to the lowest instincts [but of course also], but also appeals to the brain of intelligent people. It has been produced excellently. ” Stern Online also finds positive tones and emphasizes the absurdity of the show and the charm of malicious pleasure, which make the show good entertainment, the jungle show has become socially acceptable. The Star -Redakteur Hannes Ross writes: "The Jungle Camp is nothing else to be there as a flawless TV trash. That is what defines the quality and honesty of this show ”. As a conclusion of the fifth season, the Spiegel columnist Stefan Kuzmany wrote: "From the casting of the, well, stars, to the selection of music and editing to the moderation, RTL has, you have to admit, nothing less than a really good entertainment program."

The nomination of the sixth season of the show for the Grimme Prize caused discussion at the beginning of 2013 . Among other things, the 2011 jungle king , Peer Kusmagk , faced verbal attacks by actress Katrin Sass on the television program Markus Lanz after he had defended his involvement in the broadcast format.

Surreptitious advertising in the 8th season

In the eighth season, the producers of the show staged Bahlsen cookies so prominently in a 96-second recording that the Hanover Administrative Court found surreptitious advertising in February 2016 .

Audience ratings and advertising

The show achieved very high ratings, the final in 2014 reached the ratings record with 8.68 million viewers. The advertising bookings increase accordingly during the broadcast, in 2016 the station had sales of 36.1 million euros.

Awards

  • I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! was nominated in the category Best Entertainment for the German Television Award 2011 .
  • In 2013, the show was nominated for the Grimme Prize in the entertainment category.
  • In 2013, the show won the German Comedy Award in the Best Moderation category . The moderators did not attend the award ceremony.
