The Federation against Abuse of Animals eV (bmt) is a Germany-wide non-profit animal welfare association based in Cologne.

history

In 1922 the forerunner organization "Association against the vivisection of animals" was founded, which mainly campaigned against animal experiments , poor housing conditions and the cruel treatment of animals. The association was banned and dissolved during the National Socialist era . In 1952 it was re-established with headquarters in Munich. In October 2014, the club's headquarters were relocated to Cologne.

The association is headed by four board members who are elected every four years at the annual general meeting. The head office is in Cologne. There are eleven offices nationwide. In 2012 the bmt had just under 12,000 members, and in 2015 just under 13,000. The association magazine “Das Recht der Tiere” appears quarterly with a circulation of 47,000 copies. The association is a member of the German Donation Council , representing the interests of charitable organizations that collect donations, as well as the German Nature Conservation Ring .

The association maintains 9 animal shelters, an animal welfare center in Pfullingen and ten offices.

The association regularly carries out campaigns on certain animal welfare issues, including a. on the subjects of street dogs, birds, the ban on slaughtering, the hunt for baby seals or bullfighting.

Abroad, the association is mainly active in Romania and Hungary .
