Brigitte Nielsen (born Gitte Nielsen in Rødovre on July 15, 1963 ) is a Danish model , actress and singer .

She became best known as an actress in action films after playing the role of the title hero in Red Sonja in 1985 . She later appeared in numerous B-movies , and has appeared on several reality TV shows since the early 2000s .

Career

Brigitte Nielsen was born in Denmark in 1963 as the daughter of an engineer and a librarian. In 1979 she first went to France and Italy to pursue a career as a model . She worked with designers such as Giorgio Armani , Gianni Versace and Gianfranco Ferré , among others .

She was discovered in 1985 by the Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis and signed with Arnold Schwarzenegger for the film Red Sonja . The fantasy adventure, based on Schwarzenegger's Conan films, received poor reviews and flopped at the American box office. Commercially, things went better that same year with Rocky IV - The Fight of the Century alongside Sylvester Stallone . The boxing film grossed over $ 125 million at box offices in the United States and over $ 300 million worldwide and is considered the most commercially successful part of the film series. She was also privately dating Stallone at the time of filming, and the two married in late 1985.

The following year, Nielsen was initially awarded the Golden Raspberry as “ worst newcomer of the year ”. She received this award in equal parts for her first two film roles. For her next role in the action film Die City-Cobra , again at Stallone's side, Nielsen was nominated for the negative award. Although this film received mostly bad reviews, it grossed around $ 160 million worldwide. A similarly big hit was Beverly Hills Cop II in 1987 , in which Nielsen can be seen in a supporting role. Her popularity in Germany at this time was so great that the readers of Bravo magazine awarded her the bronze Otto as actress of the year behind Kelly McGillis and Jennifer Gray . Offers for photo series in Playboy also contributed to their popularity . Between 1986 and 1989 Nielsen was featured in five issues of the men's magazine .

In 1987 she worked with the photographer Helmut Newton , who shot her for Vanity Fair magazine . This recording was later found in the illustrated book Sumo , which is considered the largest and most expensive illustrated book of the 20th century. After their marriage to Stallone made headlines in the rainbow press, the couple divorced in July 1987. Nielsen took her first leading role in 1988 in the film Domino sucht die Liebe . Italian production flopped worldwide. For her performance, she was nominated for the Golden Raspberry for the last time.

Up until 2000, there were further appearances in various television and video productions as well as a few supporting roles in movies almost every year. “The man-murdering vamp never got beyond second-rate action films,” wrote the star about her film career in 2008. For example, the magazine film-dienst considered the women's prison film Chained Heat 2 (1993) “a pitifully bad film”. She played her last major role so far in Doomsdayer (2000) alongside Udo Kier , devalued by film-dienst as "a brazen medley of well-known agent and action films in which mediocre actors act like soulless templates".

One of her few successes was the role of the black witch in the five-part film series Princess Fantaghirò , which she embodied for the first time in 1992 in the second part . Until 1996 she remained loyal to the lavish Italian production and played alongside internationally known actors such as Mario Adorf , Ursula Andress and Horst Buchholz .

Since 2000, Nielsen has drawn attention primarily through numerous appearances in talk and entertainment shows. She also became a popular protagonist for reality TV . In the USA, Great Britain, Denmark, Italy and Germany, she mainly marketed her private life: After years of drug and alcohol problems, Nielsen did Celebrity Rehab with Dr. in the first season of the VH1 show in 2008. As a singer

Parallel to her film roles, Nielsen started her singing career in 1987: She signed a contract with Teldec and released the pop album Every Body Tells a Story . In addition to Marc Singer, Christian De Walden, who was working with Bonnie Bianco , Anne Murray and Audrey Landers , among others, was hired as a producer . Although they also released the title song from it as a single in Wetten, dass ..? presented, neither the LP nor the single was successful. Only a collaboration with Falco and Giorgio Moroder earned her a hit in Germany and Austria: The single Body Next to Body was released at the end of 1987, reached the top 10 in the Austrian and top 25 in the German charts. In 1991 Nielsen signed another recording contract and first released the album I Am the One ... Nobody Else in Italy , another De Walden production. The following year the CD was also released in Germany by Polydor . The singles My Girl (My Guy) (cover of the Temptations and Mary Wells classics) and How Could You Let Me Go failed to establish Nielsen as a singer. After that, Nielsen paused before going back to the studio with De Walden in the new millennium: in 2000 and 2001 the house singles No More Turning Back , Tic Toc and Everybody's Turning Back (vs. Rozalla ) were released under the pseudonym Gitta . In 2002 a collaboration with the singing drag queen RuPaul (You're No Lady) followed .

Private

At the beginning of her career as a model, she met her first husband, the musician Kasper Winding , with whom she was married from 1983 to 1984 and has a son (* 1984). Her media-rich marriage with the actor Sylvester Stallone lasted from December 1985 to July 1987. After him, she was in a relationship with the football star Mark Gastineau in 1988 , with whom she had a son in 1989. After that, Nielsen went to the altar three more times: from 1990 to 1992 she was married to photographer Sebastian Copeland , Orlando Bloom's cousin , and from 1993 to 2005 to former racing driver Raoul Meyer-Ortolani , with whom she has two sons (* 1993 and 1995). Since July 2006 she has been married to the 15 years younger bartender Mattia Dessi. According to press reports, the wedding took two attempts: The first yes in February 2006 turned out to be invalid because Nielsen was still married to Raoul Meyer-Ortolani. In June 2018 she had a daughter with Dessi at the age of 54.

Her affair with rapper Flavor Flav of Public Enemy in 2006 was part of his reality show Flavor of Love . In 2008, Nielsen publicly confessed to suffering from alcoholism and participated in the reality show Celebrity Rehab . In 2012 she relapsed.
