youth

Orlando Bloom is the son of children's author Sonia Copeland-Bloom. His legal father is the South African journalist and civil rights activist Harry Bloom. It was only in adulthood that he learned that his biological father was his godfather, Colin Stone, a school principal and close friend of the family. Bloom attended various schools in his native Canterbury and suffered from dyslexia in his youth . His family were very religious and staunch members of the Anglican Church .

Career

Bloom first came into contact with acting and reciting texts through the Christian upbringing that their mother gave him and his sister Samantha - according to their own account, the children had to learn Bible verses by heart every Sunday. At 16, Bloom moved to London and enrolled in the National Youth Theater drama school for teenagers and young adults. During this time he also earned his first spurs as an extra and supporting actor . He made his first, brief appearance in a movie in the 1997 production of Wilde about Oscar Wilde . Bloom played a stick boy; his dialogue was limited to a single sentence. However, this scene forms a key scene in the film: Oscar Wilde recognizes his own homosexuality for the first time through the presence of the rent boy . Bloom then got some offers for film and television, which he turned down to complete his education at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama .

Two days before graduating from the Guildhall School Bloom was told that it the role of the elf Legolas in the Lord of the Rings - filming was allowed to play. Although he auditioned for the role of Faramir at the casting , Peter Jackson was convinced that he had found the perfect Legolas in him. Bloom embodied the Elf Legolas in all three parts of the trilogy and became known worldwide. In the break from filming the first and second films in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Bloom had enough time to play a small supporting role in Ridley Scott's war film Black Hawk Down .

From 2003 Bloom continuously played the role of Will Turner in the series Pirates of the Caribbean . In Wolfgang Petersen's Troy (2004) Bloom acted alongside Brad Pitt and Diane Kruger in the role of Paris . In the independent production Haven (2004) he participated for the first time as a co-producer and appeared on the side of Bill Paxton .

In his first major leading role in Ridley Scott's historical epic Kingdom of Heaven , he was unable to convince moviegoers or critics in 2005. For this film he received the Jameson People's Choice Awards . In the fall of 2005 Bloom showed himself for the first time in a modern comedy with the film Elizabethtown , in which he played alongside Kirsten Dunst and Susan Sarandon . He was able to convince the critics with a solid performance, but the film fell short of its expectations at the box office. The production costs were not recovered until the DVD was released.

In August 2010, directed by Paul WS Anderson, filming began in Bamberg and Würzburg for the new edition of The Three Musketeers (2011) in 3D, in which Bloom plays the Duke of Buckingham at Christoph Waltz's side . Since March 2011 Bloom has been Hugo Boss Orange's new advertising face .

In the three-part film adaptation of the Tolkien novel and Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit , he again took on the role of Legolas .
