Sea Shepherd Global is an international marine conservation organization based in Amsterdam , which is particularly committed to protecting the seas , fighting illegal fishing , killing marine mammals , turtles and sharks, and polluting the seas .

Main topics

Illegal fishing

In the fight against illegal fishing , Sea Shepherd relies primarily on cooperation with states that do not themselves have enough resources to effectively control their coastline. In this collaboration, Sea Shepherd provides the fleet, crew and equipment. The authorities from the countries concerned man Sea Shepherd's ships with law enforcement officers who have the authority to control ships and arrest them in the event of violations of the law. Only at Operation Icefish were no law enforcement officers on board. Sea Shepherd therefore contacted national authorities and Interpol as soon as they became aware of illegal activity. The arrests were then carried out by these authorities.

Protection from turtles

Sea Shepherds patrol stretches of beach where turtles lay their eggs, especially at night. This prevents poachers from collecting the eggs to sell them for consumption on the black market or from killing the mother turtles for their meat before the eggs are laid. During Operation Jairo Med , Sea Shepherd employees observe and document nesting beaches around Rome and Naples, while Sam Simon patrols the Tyrrhenian Sea and, in collaboration with the authorities, removes illegal fishing equipment and rubbish that can be dangerous to the turtles from the sea .

Protection of marine mammals

Sea Shepherd documents both the targeted killing of marine mammals and their death as bycatch. Furthermore, the organization takes legal action against these practices. Where possible, Sea Shepherd ships carry whales and dolphins away from the beaches of the Faroe Islands as they are threatened with death. Marine mammals that would end up in poachers' nets as bycatch are protected through direct action against these poachers.

In 2014 the International Court of Justice ruled that Japan must end whaling in Antarctica. The verdict was also made possible by the fact that Sea Shepherd recorded extensive video material in the course of the whale defense campaigns and made it available to the plaintiffs.

Pollution of the seas

Sea Shepherd Global and its associated country organizations educate the public about how waste can be avoided and how it threatens the marine ecosystem. They also regularly carry out beach clean ups around the world. Sea Shepherd Australia alone disposed of 700,000 cigarette butts. It is estimated that one cigarette butt contaminates around 500 liters of water. The collected cigarette butts had the potential to pollute 350 million liters of water.

Protecting Maui Dolphins

With approximately 57 animals remaining, the Maui dolphin is the rarest dolphin in the world. The Maui dolphin is particularly threatened by commercial fishing . An average of 5 Maui dolphins per year fall victim to it as bycatch , and the food supply of these animals is reduced by fishing. In 2012 Sea Shepherd drew attention to the situation and asked for a petition to be signed to the New Zealand government banning nylon nets in the habitat of the Maui and Hector dolphins . In 2019 Sea Shepherd urged the authorities in the USA to ban the import of New Zealand fishery products that endanger the survival of the species. This should be done on the basis of the Marine Mammal Protection Act , a law that aims to reduce bycatch of marine mammals worldwide. When the petition was rejected, Sea Shepherd filed a lawsuit in May 2020 against the relevant authorities for failing to implement the legal requirements.

successes

Operation Icefish : Between 2014 and 2016, Sea Shepherd managed to bring Bandit 6 to law enforcement, secure 72 kilometers of abandoned gillnets and set a new record for the longest sea chase. The Bandit 6 was a poaching fleet that was wanted by Interpol for illegally fishing for hake . Five of the ships were arrested, but the Thunder was sunk by its own captain after a 110-day chase, presumably to avoid prosecution. Operation Icefish had a number of legal ramifications for the poachers. The Supreme Court of São Tomé and Príncipe sentenced three Thunder officers to three years' imprisonment and imposed a total fine of 15 million euros. Spanish courts fined € 31.2 million for people and companies involved in the illegal fishing of Bandit 6 . In February 2016, the Indonesian Navy seized the poaching ship Viking . Her captain, Huan Venesa and ten members of his crew were arrested. The Viking was sunk by the Indonesian authorities in Pangandaran , West Java on April 6, 2016 . With the 110-day chase, the Bob Barker has set a new record for the "longest chase at sea".

As part of Operation Relentless 784 whales were saved from the Japanese whaling fleet.

Operation Albacore I to IV : In the years 2016 to 2019, fifteen ships were arrested in cooperation with the government of Gabon and São Tomé and Principe .

Operation Sola Stella : Between 2017 and 2018, fifteen ships were arrested in cooperation with the government of Liberia . Before the start of Operation Sola Stella , local fishermen in the fishing town of Harper complained of the illegal intrusion of foreign trawlers into their fishing areas on an almost daily basis. However, during the final months of the controls, the Sea Shepherds did not see any more illegal activity. This fact was brought up at the United Nations Ocean Conference as a positive example that effective controls have a deterrent effect. On February 11, 2019, Liberia's President George Manneh Weah bestowed his country's highest military award on Sea Shepherd for "outstanding service to the Liberian people".

Operation Jodari : In 2018, in cooperation with the government of Tanzania, two longliners were arrested for illegal shark finning . The two ships were fined the equivalent of over $ 8 million. One of the two longliners is called Buah Naga 1 . Your captain was arrested in January 2018. Her owner and agent were arrested in June 2018. On December 4, 2018, the three people were sentenced to 20 years in prison or the equivalent of € 383,000 fine. Furthermore, a fine of the equivalent of € 6,865,160 was imposed on 19 fishing vessels that escaped control. In addition, 27 small dhows were confiscated for smuggling wood from mangrove forests . On February 18, 2019, the Andrey Dolgov was set. It is estimated that this ship had poached fish worth over € 44 million in the past 10 years.

Operation Apex Harmony Timor Leste : In 2017, 15 ships were arrested in cooperation with the government of East Timor . After nine months in port, the fleet was released on bail of $ 100,000. The fleet could not fish during the arrest. Based on the rate at which it was killing sharks to date, it is estimated that over 800,000 sharks have been saved.

Operation Driftnet : In 2016, Sea Shepherd collected evidence that the Fu Yuan Yu fleet was illegally fishing with driftnets . The Steve Irwin escorted the six-ship fleet to the Chinese port of Zhuhai , where Sea Shepherd handed over the collected evidence. The Chinese authorities then detained the fleet for an indefinite period of time, revoked three captains of their licenses, imposed a fine of the equivalent of 900,000 US dollars and revoked the shipping company's license to fish.

In operation Sleppid Grindini schools were of pilot whales , white-sided dolphins , white-beaked dolphins , bottlenose dolphins and Risso's dolphins from the Faroe Islands led away. According to Sea Shepherd, this saved the lives of hundreds of these animals.

In 2016 Sea Shepherd made a documentary as part of Operation Jeedera showing the beauty of the Great Australian Bight . In order to reach as many people as possible, the film was shown free of charge from the start.

Operation Nyamba : Sea Shepherd volunteers have been patrolling Mayotte beaches since 2017 . The patrols take place every night when the turtles lay their eggs. According to the Journal de Mayotte , the campaign saved over 200 sea turtles, who were able to lay their nests undisturbed.

According to Sea Shepherd, 1.2 million pieces of garbage were collected by over 10,000 volunteers in Australia alone as part of the Marine Debris Campaign .

Operation Siracusa : From 2013 to 2018, Sea Shepherd volunteers patrolled the shores of the Area Marina Protetta Plemmirio marine reserve . They were able to save the lives of thousands of groupers , sea cucumbers and sea urchins .

In the course of operation Siso were around the Aeolian Islands 150 km of illegal fishing gear and 77 illegal Lockbojen recovered. In addition, over 180 tonnes of illegal catches were confiscated and a total of around 7.7 million euros in sanctions was imposed.

Operation Gambian Coastal Defense : On August 27, 2019, the two fishing vessels Lao Yuan Yu 010 and Victory 205 were arrested in cooperation with law enforcement officers from Gambia . The reasons for the arrest were, among other things, fishing without a logbook and fishing within the nine-mile zone, which is reserved for local fishermen. In the same year twelve more trawlers were arrested by the Gambian law enforcement officers being brought from the Sea Shepherd ship Sam Simon to the illegally operating ships.

Structure and finances

Sea Shepherd Global is a non-profit, registered in the Netherlands foundation led by General Manager Captain Alex Cornelissen. Sea Shepherd Global is financially and legally independent from the US-based Sea Shepherd Conservation Society . Sea Shepherd Global coordinates finance, logistics, communications and fleet for over 20 country groups. These country groups, with the exception of the US, co-fund Sea Shepherd Global's campaigns. Sea Shepherd Global as well as the country groups and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society are shortened to “Sea Shepherd”.

Sea Shepherd Global, like the country groups it coordinates, has few registered members. Instead, they rely on:

  • Volunteers at sea who work on the ships.
  • Land volunteers selling merchandise and working on land-based campaigns, organizing fundraising events, participating in clean ups or informing the public.
  • Divers reporting criminal activity, teaching coral courses, and removing trash from water bodies.
  • Part Time Heroes (German: Teilzeithelden), who support Sea Shepherd financially; either through regular payments or by organizing fundraising events.

The costs for campaigns with the support of the fleet are given as 3333 € per day and ship.

Logos

The Jolly Roger was designed by Sea Shepherd Artistic Director Geert Vons . According to Sea Shepherd Global, it symbolizes their fight against all forms of piracy, be it illegal fishing, poaching in marine protected areas or pirate whaling. The shepherd's crook and Neptune's trident represent the protection of the seas. The whale and the dolphin are based on the yin and yang symbols and represent the fragile equilibrium in the oceans.

The Classic logo was created in 1981. The humpback whale and dolphin represent Sea Shepherd's determination to fight for marine mammals . In the original design, the words "Sea Shepherd Conservation Society" were around the picture with the two marine mammals. Sea Shepherd Global uses some adaptations of the classic logo. In one adaptation only the two marine mammals can be seen, in another Sea Shepherd stands above and in a third Defend - Conserve - Protect below the picture.

There are also separate logos for the various campaigns.
