Heaven Shall Burn ( engl. "The sky will burn") is a German metalcore - and Melodic Death Metal - band from Saalfeld / Saale in Thuringia . She is considered one of the most important representatives of German metalcore.

history

Early Years (1996-2002)

Singer Marcus Bischoff

The band was founded in 1996 by guitarist Maik Weichert and drummer Matthias Voigt as Before the Fall and renamed Consense a little later . In the same year the band played a first demo . After the first line-up had proven to be unstable, the cousins Marcus and Eric Bischoff joined the band in the spring of 1997 as singers and bassists, respectively. The second demo was finally recorded in this constellation. Shortly before the first studio recordings, the band name was changed to Heaven Shall Burn for the last time , taken from the title of the album Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered by the Swedish black metal band Marduk , which was in turn taken from a verse from Bathory's album Blood Fire Death was inspired. Marduk's album "was ubiquitous to us at the time we were looking for a name"; For her, heaven stands for “a false paradise that some people build up in their heads. Many people live far from reality and fool themselves into something. This false paradise should be destroyed or 'burn'. These people have to wake up from their daydreams and finally understand that they should, for example, take their lives into their own hands and that no God helps them to achieve their goals. So it's ALSO about people who blindly follow a religion. In contrast to some other bands we don't want to burn down their houses or rape their wives, we just want to draw attention to this problem ”. The name has nothing to do with Satanism , but according to Maik Weichert, Heaven Shall Burn was often mistaken for a black metal or Marduk cover band.

The first recordings were finally released by the small label Deeds of Revolution Records in autumn 1998 as their debut EP In Battle There Is No Law , the title was taken over from the debut LP of the band Bolt Thrower . A few weeks later, Patrick Schleitzer joined the band as the second guitarist. In 1999 a split LP followed with Fall of Serenity . Shortly thereafter, a contract was signed with Lifeforce Records , which released the debut album Asunder in 2000 . Also in 2000 the split CD Caliban vs. Heaven Shall Burn: The Split Program at Lifeforce. In addition to a European tour, the band played in South America and at festivals such as With Full Force , Wacken Open Air and Summer Breeze in the next few years .

It debuted at number 65 on the official German LP charts, in Greece it reached number 50. The album's title plays on a line from the poem The Silesian Weavers of Heinrich Heine on. In addition to countless concerts at home and abroad, Heaven Shall Burn was recently one of the headliners of the Hell-on-Earth tour.

In the following year, in addition to a tour of South America, the first appearance in Russia and participation in the Wacken Open Air followed . On the album you can find the title Given in Death , which is sung by Deadlock alternately between Marcus Bischoff and Sabine Scherer . The album entered the German album charts at number 9. The album Of Truth and Sacrifice was released on March 20, 2020 and entered the German album charts at number one .

style

Heaven Shall Burn at Rock im Park 2016

The band combines hardcore elements with extreme death metal , thrash metal and sometimes melodic hooklines in their music . The texts address , among other things, political issues, the fight against racism and fascism as well as for freedom and against surveillance and respect for nature . Most of the band members are vegan , all members are vegetarian and four of the five are straight edge , so they refrain from alcohol and other drugs, which is also included in the lyrics. In addition, Heaven Shall Burn calls on its listeners to be more mature in order to independently question false idols, leaders and power relations both politically and apolitically.

For a Tsunami charity split CD with The Haunted and Napalm Death they covered the song Strassenkampf by the band Die Skeptiker , which contains the line “Our hearts are beating left”. The text of Strassenkampf was almost completely taken over, only the line “our goal is anarchy” has been changed to “our goal is unity”. Atmospheric intros, outros and interludes, composed by Ólafur Arnalds , can be heard on several of the band's releases .

social commitment

The band supports the marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd . The organization's logo could be seen on the jerseys of the soccer club FC Carl Zeiss Jena sponsored by Heaven Shall Burn . The band also brought out a clothing line in cooperation with Sea Shepherd and visited their ships.
