history

A Small Boy and a Gray Heaven and Vent (1997 to 2002)

Marco Schaller and Denis Schmidt at Nova Rock 2016

Caliban was founded in 1997 in Hattingen under the name Never Again . After six months of playing together, the band recorded two songs for a compilation , which were never released. The songs were sent to various record labels. Lifeforce Records then signed Caliban. The first self-named single came out in the summer of 1998. To make the CD known, Caliban played many gigs across Europe and supported Morning Again , Earth Crisis and Cro-Mags , among others .

After the European tour in 1999, Caliban went into the studio to record their first album A Small Boy and a Gray Heaven . Shortly after the release, Claus Wilgenbusch left the band for personal reasons and was replaced by Thomas Sielemann. With Sielemann on second guitar, Caliban recorded four songs for a split with their befriended band Heaven Shall Burn . In April 2001 the band released their second album, Vent , which was also released in Japan via Imperium Records and Howling-Bull Records . Then they played at the Beast Feast Festival with bands like Slayer , Pantera , Machine Head , Biohazard and Morbid Angel .

Shadow Hearts , The Opposite from Within and The Undying Darkness (2002 to 2007)

Shadow Hearts , the band's third album, followed in 2003. A subsequent tour of Japan with Killswitch Engage and Shadows Fall made them even more popular. In January 2004, recordings began for the fourth album, The Opposite from Within . For this album they were able to win Anders Fridén , front man for In Flames , for the production. It was mixed by Andy Sneap, who already worked for bands like Machine Head , Arch Enemy and Killswitch Engage. The Opposite from Within was released in September 2004 on the new label Roadrunner Records .

From September to October 2005, Caliban were in the studio to record their fifth studio album, The Undying Darkness . There have been some changes musically. The numerous clean sung parts of guitarist Denis Schmidt are particularly striking. The CD reached number 73 in the German charts, which is an extraordinary success for a metalcore band. In the summer of 2006 the band played at the Wacken Open Air . From spring 2007 to summer 2007 Caliban played as headliners on the Darkness over Europe tour together with All Shall Perish , Bleeding Through and I Killed the Prom Queen concerts all over Europe.

The Awakening and Say Hello to Tragedy (2007 to 2009)

Caliban's sixth album, The Awakening , was released on May 25, 2007 . The CD reached number 36 in the German album charts. In the summer of 2007 Caliban played at many European festivals, including in Germany at the With Full Force and the Summer Breeze . From September to October 2007 Caliban gave concerts all over Europe together with Soilwork , Dark Tranquility and Sonic Syndicate as part of the Eastpak Antidote Tour . On October 23, 2007, the album The Awakening was released in America via Century Media.

In 2009 Roadrunner US changed its label policy and offered the band a 360 ° deal. With this, the record company would not only have benefited from album sales, but would also have received part of the income from the band's concerts and merchandising . Caliban declined the offer and have been under contract with Century Media Records since June 2009 . Their seventh album Say Hello to Tragedy was produced by Benny Richter, co-produced by Marc Görtz and mixed by Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz , like the previous album . Say Hello to Tragedy was released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on August 21, 2009. The album was released on August 24, 2009 in other European countries and on August 25, 2009 in the USA. The cover artwork for this album was created by Bastian Sobtzick, the front man of the metalcore band Callejon .

The band then worked on their ninth studio album, Ghost Empire, as well as on a DVD that will be included with the album as bonus material. Ghost Empire was released on January 24, 2014.
