I Am Nemesis is the eighth studio album by the German metalcore band Caliban , released on February 3, 2012 on Century Media .
background
In contrast to previous albums, the band took more time in the studio and largely avoided performing live. In total, Caliban worked on the album for ten months, which was almost twice as long as the band otherwise needed. The songs were mainly arranged by Marc Görtz and keyboardist Benny Richter. Richter was also the main producer of the album. Görtz and Marcel Neumann (from We Butter the Bread with Butter ) worked as co-producers on the album.
Marc Görtz chose a more experimental approach for the band's eighth studio album. So he tried to achieve heaviness through heavy instead of fast riffs and tried to make the album as atmospheric as possible.
The album was recorded within three to four weeks in the Level3 Entertainment studio in Essen, the vocals were sung in a studio in Düsseldorf within four weeks.
Christoph Koterzina ( Callejón ), Marcus Bischoff ( Heaven Shall Burn ) and Mitch Lucker ( Suicide Silence ) are guest singers on the album. During the crew shouts you can hear the musicians of As Blood Runs Black , who happened to be on tour in Germany and visited the band in the studio.
Music genre
For the band it is the hardest album of the band up to this point, whereby Metalcore- typical hard and melodic passages are combined. On the album, Caliban combine driving death metal with hardcore punk and thrash metal . The album is mostly dark and heavy. Influences came on this album from Meshuggah and Dredg , but also Muse .
Thematically, the texts tie in with the predecessor Say Hello to Tragedy (2009) and focus on controversial and often overlooked world problems. They deal with illness and infection as an overarching topic. Problems such as bullying on social media , but also specific climate and environmental disasters, are referred to as diseases of our world. The album title is to be understood as a systopia and refers to an impending end of the world.
Edge of Black is about oil disasters and ruthless companies that don't care about the world's fate. With Dein R3.ich there is also a German-language song on the album for the first time, the content of which deals with the complex of right-wing extremism and was written from a first-person perspective. The title is a play on words in Leetspeak with "Your Reich" and " Third Reich ". The idea of recording a German-language song came through their cover EP Coverfield , on which they interpreted the Rammstein song Sonne and singer Andreas Dörner sang in German for the first time. Memorial, on the other hand, is a very personal text that deals with the cancer death of Andreas Dörner's father.
Cover artwork
The cover should reflect the content of the album. It shows a grimace with bleeding eyes and mouth and is supposed to represent a person marked with a serious illness. In the context of the dystopian texts, the grievances of society are compared to illnesses. The photo is a still from the Memorial video , for which Mark Krämer was responsible, who also directed the video. He is an old friend of the band, but he only designed t-shirts before.
Publication and promotion
The first song Memorial was premiered on December 19, 2011 as a music video on the Metal Hammer Germany website . Although the text is a very personal subject, a different approach was taken for the video. Since the subject of "infected" and "disease" play a major role, the video alludes more to an infectious disease that is transmitted by an old man. In the course of the video, the "infected" band members get rid of the disease. However, this scene has often been misinterpreted as a corpse paint , as is common in Black Metal . The second single, Dein R3ich , was released on January 6, 2012 as a free download.
The album itself was released in several versions on February 3, 2012 via Century Media. A special box set contained a bonus CD with cover songs , including the songs Sun (Rammstein) and Blinded By Fear ( At the Gates ), a bandana , a lanyard , five autographed autograph cards, stickers, and three guitars - Picks as well as a fan club card, which enabled temporary membership in the fan club. The special edition appeared in a digipak and also contained the bonus CD and a sticker. There was also a normal LP version and two limited editions of 100 copies each on white and green vinyl.
Caliban promoted the album as part of its Get Infected Tour 2012, which started on February 2nd in Karlsruhe (Germany). Winds of Plague , We Butter the Bread with Butter , Eyes Set to Kill and Attila could be signed as opening acts . All Shall Perish had to cancel the tour for personal reasons , it was replaced by Winds of Plague.

reception
Alexander Austel awarded four out of five stars on Laut.de and constant:
“Even if the fiver plays forever in the slipstream of Heaven Shall Burn, just as Dark Tranquility never comes close to In Flames, this disc has a higher raison d'être than simply being the pretended reason for another tour. Apart from that, Caliban's "I Am Nemesis" underpinned their status as the spearhead of the increasingly quieter Metalcore genre. "
In Rock Hard 297 (February 2012) Tobias Blum's album received 8.0 (out of ten) points. Above all, he emphasized the refrains with which they would still play "in a league of their own in this genre in Germany".
