Motley Crue [ mɑːtli kɹuː ] ( corruption of English motley crew "motley crew" or "motley bunch") is an American glam metal - band that in 1980 Los Angeles was founded. The band consists of the musicians Nikki Sixx , Mick Mars , Tommy Lee and Vince Neil . Both singer Neil and drummer Lee were temporarily replaced by other musicians in the 1990s. Despite many legal disputes and personal problems, the band existed in their original line-up until 2015. At the end of 2018, the band reformed for the release of the soundtrack for the film The Dirt , which deals with the band's biography , which premiered in Hollywood on March 18, 2019 and has been shown in Germany on the Netflix streaming service since March 22, 2019.

Mötley Crüe are one of the most famous users of heavy metal umlauts and pioneers of a style of music that spawned many other bands. To date, they have sold around 100 million albums worldwide.

history

The band was formed in January 1980 by bassist Nikki Sixx after he separated from the band London . Sixx asked his former bandmate Greg Leon if he didn't know any other musicians who wanted to start a band with him. Leon recommended him to drummer Tommy Lee, then a member of Suite 19 . Sixx and Lee were now looking for more musicians, through an advertisement in a music magazine they met the guitarist Mick Mars.

Since the band was still without a name, Sixx suggested the name Xmass, which was quickly rejected by the other band members. Mick Mars remembered a comment from a bassist in one of his old bands who called the band members a " motley crew " - so the band decided to call themselves Mottley Krew, which was later changed to Mötley Crüe. The umlaut characters were chosen based on the beer brand Löwenbräu , which according to the band members was their favorite beer . Only a singer was still missing. This was found by chance, actually the band wanted to persuade the guitarist of the band Rock Candy to join the band. However, Mick Mars prevailed with his opinion that a guitarist is enough, and instead Vince Neil was poached as a singer after a concert by Rockandi.

Rockandi was founded by James Alverson (guitar), in addition to Vince Neil, the group also included drummer Robert Stokes and bassist Joe Marks. The idiosyncratic spelling of the band's name was deliberately chosen.

1980s

Mötley Crüe recorded the debut album Too Fast for Love in November 1981 . The album was produced by the band itself and released on the band's own label Leathür Records . The album's success in the Los Angeles club scene helped the band sign a record deal with Elektra Records in early 1982 . The album was remastered and re-released on August 20, 1982.

Live (2007)

Mötley Crüe quickly became one of the most popular bands in the country - famous for both their music and their massive drug use . The mix of heavy metal and glam rock influences brought the band some very successful albums in the 1980s. These included Shout at the Devil (1983), Theater of Pain (1985) and Girls, Girls, Girls (1987). The songs were about her love for motorcycles, whiskey and strip clubs and told of the constant antics with drugs and sex orgies.

In August 1989 they played at the Moscow Music Peace Festival alongside bands such as Bon Jovi , Ozzy Osbourne , Scorpions , Skid Row and Cinderella .

The band reached the peak of their career with the release of the fifth album Dr. Feelgood on September 23, 1989. The album rose to first place on the Billboard charts on October 14 of the same year and stayed there for 109 weeks.

1990s

In the 1990s, Mötley Crüe was more famous for the wives of three band members than for their music. Both Lee and Sixx married former Playboy - Playmates and actresses of the television series Baywatch - The Lifeguards of Malibu . Lee married Pamela Anderson and Sixx Donna D'Errico . Singer Neil married the playmate Heidi Mark . However, none of these marriages were permanent.

Vince Neil had to leave the band in February 1992 after internal disputes. The persistent indiscipline, unwillingness to work and lack of reliability of front man Neil caused plenty of resentment among the three remaining band members. He began an initially successful solo career . After Nikki Sixx answered the question about his current musical favorites in an interview with Spin magazine that he was enthusiastic about The Scream , their singer John Corabi called Mötley Crüe management on February 14, 1992 to thank them . Shortly after he finished the conversation, Nikki Sixx called him to let him know that Vince Neil had left the band and that the Crüe was looking for a new singer. He accepted Sixx's invitation, auditioned on February 17 and 18, 1992, and got the job as singer for Mötley Crüe. After the separation, drummer Tommy Lee lost personal contact with ex-singer Vince Neil for three and a half years. However, when Skylar, Neil's baby daughter, died of kidney cancer in August 1995, Tommy Lee called him on the phone to help him mentally.

Live in Erie (2009)

In 2013, Sebastian Bach claimed that Mötley Crüe asked him at the time if he wanted to replace him. Nikki Sixx reacted angrily and accused Bach of lying. Bach then posted an interview on his Facebook page in which Nikki Sixx reported in 1994 that he had asked Bach first, then Steve Perry from Journey , and finally John Corabi. Corabi was introduced as the new singer of the group in September 1992, but had already written numerous songs for the next Crüe album (working title: Til Death Do Us Part ) with the band. The 1994 album, which was simply called Mötley Crüe and produced by Bob Rock , was not commercially successful, however, mainly because the band's fans were changing the band's sound away from glam and towards harder, more contemporary sounds did not decrease. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number 7 on April 2, 1994 , but ended up at number 194 after ten weeks and then disappeared from the charts entirely.

While working on the album Generation Swine in 1997, the record label insisted that Vince Neil should return to the band for commercial reasons. He accepted, also because his own career was fizzling out, accepted the offer, which meant the end of John Corabi at Mötley Crüe. The titles Flush and Let Us Prey on Generation Swine were created with the help of Corabi.

Tommy Lee did not agree with this development, as he perceived a musical backward orientation, but recorded the two new titles for the best of album Greatest Hits ( Bitter Pill and Enslaved ) with the group in 1998 . He also played on the subsequent tour with the band, but then announced his departure from the band.

2000 to 2015

He was replaced by Randy Castillo , who had previously played drums in Ozzy Osbourne's band . With him, the group recorded the album New Tattoo , which was released in 2000. Before the associated tour, Castillo fell ill with cancer. For the tour he was replaced by Samantha Maloney, drummer for the band Hole . Castillo died on March 26, 2002.

In 2001 her autobiography The Dirt was published , which was directed by Jeff Tremaine and first aired on Netflix in March 2019. In 2004, the toy manufacturer McFarlane Toys paid tribute to the band when it released miniature sculptures of all four musicians in the outfit of the Shout at the Devil Tour .

Live in Glasgow (2005)

In recent years Sixx has played in bands 58 (original project name 1958 after Nikki's year of birth) and Brides of Destruction , Lee in Methods of Mayhem and as a solo artist, and Neil toured annually as a solo artist, mainly singing Mötley Crüe songs. Mars suffered severe back problems from his ankylosing spondylitis , which he was diagnosed with when he was 20 years old.

In September 2004, Sixx announced that he and Neil would record new songs. In 2004 a tour with the original cast was planned, which should start on February 14th in San Juan . The album accompanying the tour was released in February 2005 and is called Red, White, & Crüe , on which three new songs (including a The Rolling Stones cover) as well as the band members' favorite songs can be heard.

In the course of this release, the big reunion tour took place as planned, which the Crüe again in the summer of 2005 for the first time since 1991 (at that time as part of the Monsters-of-Rock tour with AC / DC , Metallica , Queensrÿche and Black Crowes ) led to Germany. At Rock am Ring and Rock im Park these concerts took place.

In January 2006 the live DVD Carnival of Sins was released. Almost at the same time, Nikki Sixx announced that they were already working on a new Mötley Crüe album.

On January 25, 2006, shortly before the third part of their Carnival-of-sins-Reunion-Tour , Mötley Crüe received a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood 25 years after the band's official formation .

After the last live album Entertainment or Death (1999) was still a collection of live recordings from different concerts and periods, Mötley Crüe released the album Carnival in Germany in May 2006 (after it was released in America at the beginning of the year) of Sins - live . This is a complete concert recording, which is identical to the DVD version. Also in May, an audio book version of The Dirt will be published , which will be read by Ralf Richter , but which does not do justice to the scope of the book because only excerpts from individual chapters are presented.

In April 2008 the song Saints of Los Angeles was released by AOL Music. The album of the same name was released in mid-July 2008.

In the summer of 2009 the Crüe visited Germany again after several years as part of the "Saints of Los Angeles European Tour" and played in Munich , Stuttgart , Berlin and Cologne . Supporting acts were Duff McKagan 's Loaded and Backyard Babies .

In 2013, singer Vince Neil announced that the band would break up in 2015 after a farewell tour. Although he said that he did not categorically rule out ever doing new projects with his colleagues, this would not be expected for ten years at the earliest. However, Neil ruled out a delay on the farewell tour. He, and later Tommy Lee, cited Mick Mars' health as the reason for the breakup. But this denied this. Furthermore, they want to end the band at their zenith.

After the announced farewell tour with Alice Cooper in the opening act, the band split up on December 31, 2015 after three concerts at the Staples Center in Los Angeles . The last of the concerts was recorded for publications.

2017

Mötley Crüe was scheduled to perform at the inauguration of the newly elected 45th President of the United States on January 20, 2017, but was removed from office. The invitation would only have been valid if Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton had won.

2019

The biopic The Dirt - They Wanted Sex, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll released.

On November 18, 2019 Mötley Crüe announced their reunion. This happened in a statement that the band published on their public channels in the form of a video.

The statement is made by the rapper Machine Gun Kelly, who portrays Tommy Lee in The Dirt .

In 2014 Mötley Crüe announced their final concert series and thus put an end to almost 35 years on tour. To make it official, they signed an unprecedented contract. Last year Mötley Crüe became more popular than ever and gained a whole new legion of fans who, along with the die-hard Crüeheads, demanded that the band tear up this stupid contract and come back from retirement.

They knew that if they were ever to be on stage together again, that contract would have to be broken. Well: Destruction has never been a problem for Mötley Crüe.

The band also announced that they want to go on a stadium tour of the USA with the band Poison and Def Leppard in 2020.
