Steve Perry (born January 22, 1949 in Hanford , California ; actually Stephen Ray Perry ) is an American singer with Portuguese roots, who is also known under the name "The Voice". He also composed film music .

Life

Perry grew up in a musical environment as his father Ray Pereira (who later changed his last name to Perry) was a singer himself. At the age of ten he heard Sam Cooke's song Cupid on his mother's car radio; this inspired him to also become a singer.

He made his breakthrough in the late 1970s as a singer in the band Journey . With his voice and his expressiveness, he went on a total of six world tours with the band. In 1984 he released his debut album as a solo artist under the title Street Talk . The first single Oh Sherrie , which he wrote for his girlfriend at the time, Sherrie Swafford, reached number 3 on the Billboard charts in June 1984. It was followed by three more singles, all of which were able to place in the Billboard charts. In 1985, as a member of USA for Africa, he was involved in the creation of the single We Are the World . He left the band Journey in March 1987.

In 1988 he took up his own material again. The finished album Against the Wall was initially unreleased. After a lengthy hiatus, Perry began work on his next album, For the Love of Strange Medicine , which was released in 1994 after several delays. With this album he went on a solo tour in America from late 1994 to early 1995.

In 1991 there was a one-day reunion with his former bandmates; he played with Cain and Schon at the Bill Graham Memorial Concert. This was the last live performance of the successful cast (even if only partially performed).

In 1996 the apparently final reunion of Journey took place. They recorded Trial by Fire , but there was (for the first time since 1981), due to a fall in Hawaii and the resulting hip problems Perrys, no support tour for the album. Steve Perry left Journey again in May 1998. In the same year, the compilation Greatest Hits + Five Unreleased was released, which also includes five unreleased songs from the Against-the-Wall sessions. In the same year he composed two songs for the film Quest of Camelot . Perry was instrumental in the production of the DVDs Greatest Hits (2003) and Live in Houston 1981 (2006) by his former band Journey, which received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 .

Perry ranks 76th in the list of the 100 greatest singers of all time in the music magazine Rolling Stone . Allmusic says of Perry: "If you had to choose a singer who could best identify with the arena rock of the 80s, it would without a doubt be Journeys Steve Perry."

After Perry withdrew completely from the public after his final exit from Journey, rumors of a reunion surfaced again in 2014. However, these were denied. Perry and Schon would reportedly want to work together outside of Journey. On May 25, 2014, Perry returned to the stage when he made a guest appearance at a concert by the band Eels in Saint Paul , Minnesota . In 2018 Perry released a new album called "Traces".
