history

In 1877 the Southern Pacific Railway built a rail line that crossed the Chinese shepherd settlement. On January 17, 1877, parcels were sold. The settlement was named after the railway director James Madison Hanford (1827-1911), as he himself had shown great interest in the land in the region. Hanford became a trading center.

In the following period there were devastating fires on July 12, 1887 and June 19, 1891, each of which completely destroyed the city center and the business district. On July 19, 1891, a group of business people applied for the city to be founded. The election on August 8, 1891 ended with the result of 127 votes for the establishment of a separate city and 47 for an incorporation into Tulare County . Four days later the handwritten statutes were submitted to the Secretary of State and the city of Hanford was formally proclaimed on August 12, 1891. When Kings County was formed from parts of Tulare County in 1893 , Hanford became the administrative center.

In the young city there were soon churches, schools and an opera house . It was the only opera house between Los Angeles and San Francisco . Construction of a hall known as the Civic Auditorium began in 1923 and was completed in 1924. It is in downtown Hanford today. The main auditorium is used intensively by community groups and organizations.

It is known, among other things, as the seat of the Kings Symphony Orchestra and the Hanford Carnegie Museum , which was built in 1974 and emerged from the library of the same name ( Carnegie Library ).
