Armand Gaétan Cardinal Razafindratandra (born August 7, 1925 in Ambohimalaza , Madagascar , † January 9, 2010 in Mahajanga ) was Archbishop of Antananarivo .

Life

Armand Gaétan Razafindratandra received after philosophical and theological studies on July 27, 1954 the sacrament of priestly ordination by the Vicar Apostolic of Tananarive, Victor Alphonse Marie Sartre SJ , and specialized in Paris in the context of further studies in the fields of pastoral theology and social sciences . From 1956 he was responsible for catechetical teaching in Madagascar . He published school books, worked as a school chaplain and worked as a vicar at the Cathedral of Antananarivo .

In the sixties he worked as a parish priest, organized youth and family camps and took over the management of the newly founded National Center for Catechetical Education. As Regens he headed the boys' seminary of Faliarivo and the seminary of Ambatoroka.

Pope Paul VI appointed him bishop of Mahajanga in 1978 . He received his episcopal consecration on July 2, 1978, the Archbishop of Tananarive, Cardinal Victor Razafimahatratra SJ ; Co- consecrators were Albert Joseph Tsiahoana , Archbishop of Diégo-Suarez, and Francesco Vòllaro , OSsT , Bishop of Ambatondrazaka. In the following years he performed his pastoral office with great personal commitment: he visited the parishes of his diocese personally and often had to walk the whole way. Many of the congregations received an episcopal visitation for the first time. He was heavily involved in educational policy issues and thus contributed significantly to the democratization process in his home country.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Antananarivo on February 3, 1994 and accepted him on November 26 of the same year as a cardinal priest with the titular Church of Santi Silvestro e Martino ai Monti in the College of Cardinals .

From 1997 to 2000 he headed the bishops' conference in his home country. He was a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples .

He participated in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was elected, part and was one of the oldest eligible cardinals . After he had already turned 80, Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation on December 7, 2005.

Armand Gaétan Razafindratandra was considered one of the fathers of Malagasy democracy.
