The Erzbistum Antananarivo ( lat. : Archidioecesis Antananarivensis ) is in Madagascar preferred Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Antananarivo .
history
The Archdiocese of Antananarivo was founded in 1841 by Pope Gregory XVI. established from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Prefecture of Bourbon as Apostolic Prefecture of Madagascar . The Apostolic Prefecture of Madagascar gave up parts of its territory on September 4, 1848 to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Mayotte, Nosy Be and Comoros .
In 1848 the Apostolic Prefecture of Madagascar was founded by Pope Pius IX. raised to the apostolic vicariate . The Apostolic Vicariate Madagascar gave up on January 16, 1896 parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Vicariate North Madagascar and South Madagascar . In 1898 the Apostolic Vicariate of Madagascar was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate of Central Madagascar . On May 10, 1913, the Vicariate Apostolic of Central Madagascar gave up parts of its territory to establish the Vicariate Apostolic Fianarantsoa . Another assignment of territory took place on May 15, 1913 to establish the Apostolic Prefecture Betafó . The Apostolic Vicariate of Central Madagascar was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate Tananarive on May 20, 1913 . On June 18, 1935, the Apostolic Vicariate Tananarive gave parts of its territory to the establishment of the Apostolic Prefecture Vatomandry . Another assignment of territory took place on January 8, 1938 to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Morondava .
On September 14, 1955, the Vicariate Apostolic Tananarive by Pope Pius XII. raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Tananarive gave up on May 21, 1959 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Ambatondrazaka . On October 28, 1989, the Archdiocese of Tananarive was renamed the Archdiocese of Antananarivo .
Since 1969 all archbishops of Antananarivo have been created as cardinals , so that Antananarivo is traditionally a bishopric with the dignity of a cardinal.
