Alexandre-Hippolyte-Xavier Monnet CSSp (born January 4, 1812 in Mouchin , France , † December 1, 1849 in Dzaoudzi ) was a French bishop of the Roman Catholic Church and superior general of the Spiritans . From 1848 until his death he was Vicar Apostolic of Madagascar .

Life

In 1837 he was ordained a priest. In February 1840 he entered the seminary of the Mission Society of the Holy Spirit under the protection of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. On February 20, 1840, he left for Réunion and arrived on June 9, 1840. As he was in favor of freeing the slaves, the settlers rose against him and he was expelled by the governor of Réunion. On March 2, 1848, he was elected Superior General of the Congregation. From this office he resigned when he was on October 3, 1848 by Pius IX. was appointed Titular Bishop of Pella and Vicar Apostolic of Madagascar. Pierre Giraud , Archbishop of Cambrai , consecrated him bishop on November 5, 1848, in the seminary of the Congregation with the assistance of Pierre-Louis Parisis , Bishop of Langres , and Jean-Marie Graveran , Bishop of Quimper . He died a year later, on December 1, 1849, on the journey from Cherbourg to Madagascar. He worked on the islands around Madagascar, but died before entering the main island.
