Dzaoudzi is a French commune with 23,191 inhabitants (as of December 14, 2017) in the overseas territory of Mayotte .
geography
The inhabitants call themselves Dzaoudzien (ne) s or Labattoirien (ne) s, as the city consists of two main parts: Dzaoudzi and Labattoir . Dzaoudzi is the third largest city in the department. Dzaoudzi occupies the northern part of the island of Pamanzi , with Labattoir on the island and Dzaoudzi a little in front of the island. The island is part of the Comoros archipelago , which is at the northern end of the Mozambique Strait in the Indian Ocean .
population
64.7% of Dzaoudzi residents speak French and another local language (mostly Mahorish, a variant of Comorian ), 27.5% do not speak French and 7.8% only speak French. 33.7% of the residents are immigrants.
history
On November 13, 1835, a battle between the Sultan Andriantsouly, his ally, the Sultan Abdallah II of Anjouan and the partisans of Ramanetaka, the Sultan of Mohéli, took place near Dzaoudzi . On April 25, 1841, Andriantsouly gave Mayotte to France. He was murdered on September 26, 1845 on Pamanzi, at the intersection between Pamandzi , Labattoir and Dzaoudzi.
On July 20, 1953, Dzaoudzi received the status of zone urbaine (urban area).
Dzaoudzi was the capital of Mayotte until 1977, when the administrative headquarters were moved to Mamoudzou .
Culture and sights
The large crater lake Dziani Dzaha is located in the northeast of the district of Labattoir .
Mayotte's Réseau France outre-mer broadcaster is based in Dzaoudzi.
