The largest slums in Nairobi

Korogocho is the third largest slum in the Kenyan capital Nairobi after Kibera and Mathare . It belongs to the Kasarani district and is located in the eastern part of the city, adjacent to the Kariobangi , Dandora and Lucky Summer neighborhoods . The name "Korogocho" refers to the word kurugucu from the Kikuyu language and means something like "mess, chaos, garbage".

According to estimates, there are at least 150,000 people living in Korogocho who make a living mainly from informal activities. A fraction of the population derives income from formal employment, especially in the surrounding industrial areas. Thousands of people work in the adjacent Dandora dump looking for something edible or recyclable - things that are used for further processing or resold.

During the 7th World Social Forum (WSF), Korogocho entered the public eye. The Italian Alex Zanotelli is particularly socially active , the youth group Miss Koch Initiative and the local radio station 99.9 KochFM are among the most important local organizations.
