Mamoudzou is the capital of the French overseas department of Mayotte , part of the Comoros archipelago off the east coast of Africa . The community has 11,442 inhabitants (as of December 14, 2017). In 1977 Mamoudzou succeeded Dzaoudzi as the capital of Mayotte.

Mamoudzou is located on the east coast of the main island Grande Terre , facing the second largest island Pamanzi (Petite Terre) . The 41.89 km² municipal area borders on Dembeni in the south, Ouangani and Tsingoni in the west, and Koungou in the north . It is divided into eight villages and three cantons : Passamainty, Tsoundzou 1, Tsoundzou 2 and Vahibé ( Canton Mamoudzou-1 ), Mtsapere and Kavani ( Canton Mamoudzou-2 ) and Mamoudzou and Kaweni ( Canton Mamoudzou-3 ). The highest elevation in the municipality - at around 570 m at the same time the third highest elevation on the island - is the Mlima M'Tsapere (Mont Mtsapéré) on the border with the neighboring municipality of Koungou. Mamoudzou also includes the island of Mbouzi, which is covered by the protected natural reserve of l'îlot Mbouzi .
