North Transylvanian-Saxon Dictionary
The North Transylvanian -Saxon Dictionary records the dialect of the Transylvanian Saxons in and from northern Transylvania . The sub-area of the Transylvanian-Saxon language island comprises 48 localities with the cities of Bistritz and Sächsisch-Reen .
Characteristic
The lemmas are arranged alphabetically, the headwords are divided into three sections: Point I contains the sound head with all the sound forms used, in Point II the individual sentence examples are listed according to their meanings, and in Point III the compositions are listed. Synonym references attach to the respective meanings. For words from other languages, mostly Romanian and Hungarian, the word article ends with a reference to the etymology. The dictionary, which documents a dialect in decline, is not only of interest in terms of linguistic history. All aspects of community life are reflected in his records. Customs, beliefs and superstitions are represented. Agricultural work takes up a lot of space, numerous work processes can be precisely reconstructed on the basis of the notes. Names of persons, places and fields are included in the material.
The North Transylvanian-Saxon Dictionary was a project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Bonn. It was supported by the working group for Transylvanian cultural studies, Gundelsheim. The note archive is the property of the Institute for Historical Regional Studies of the Rhineland of the University of Bonn , Department for Linguistic Research.
