The diocese of Saint-Denis-de-La Réunion ( Latin Dioecesis S. Dionysii Reunionis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the French overseas department (département d'outre-mer) Réunion in the Indian Ocean . The seat is in the island's capital Saint-Denis .

history

In 1712 the Apostolic Prefecture of the Islands in the Indian Ocean was founded by Pope Clement XI. founded out of the then diocese of Malacca . Pope Pius VII renamed it to the Apostolic Prefecture of Bourbon in 1818. In 1826 and on January 10, 1830, the Apostolic Prefecture of Bourbon gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefectures of Batavia and the South Sea Islands . Gregory XVI. founded the Apostolic Prefecture of Madagascar in 1841 ; Pius IX 1850 raised the prefecture of Bourbon to today's diocese of Saint-Denis-de-La Réunion. On February 26, 1860, the Pope founded the Zanguebar Apostolic Prefecture from parts of the territory of the diocese.

The diocese is immediately and directly subordinate to the Holy See .
