history
The city's name comes from a cargo ship that belonged to the French East India Company and that reached the island in 1667. The commander of the ship Etienne Régnault decided to settle with some settlers first in Saint-Paul on the northwest coast. In 1669 he came to Saint-Denis, whose bay seemed to offer better defense. The place only gained greater importance under island governor François Mahé de Labourdonnais . In 1738, Saint-Denis became the capital of Réunion , replacing Saint-Paul. The construction of the first district began in 1742 according to plans by the engineer Pierre Guyomar. The checkerboard-like floor plan, which can still be seen today, is largely based on a design by Chevalier Gustave Banks from 1777.
