history
In 1736, Bertrand François Mahé de La Bourdonnais , governor of the Île de Bourbon (old name for La Réunion), commissioned the renowned French settler family Panon to survey the area between the two river regions Rivière du Mât and Rivière des Roches. Joseph Panon (1697–1767), son of the settler Augustin Panon (1664–1749), was entrusted with the mapping and Joseph broke his arm in a crash in the difficult terrain of the rocky area on the Rivière des Roches. Due to the incident, the place was named Bras-Panon (German: "Arm des Panons"). The current name of the city Bras-Panon was confirmed and officially introduced by decree of February 24, 1882 by the then French President François Paul Jules Grévy on the basis of this incident.
In 1882 Bras-Panon became an independent municipality. Until then, the settlement had belonged to the municipality of Saint-Benoît . At that time the city had 2,587 inhabitants.
