history

Jean Marquet first settled in the area in 1675, and a stream is named after him. In 1699 Texer de Mota, a Portuguese native from India, granted plantation concessions. The Chemin Crémont , the first paved road after the capital Saint-Denis , was built in 1730–1767. In 1797 the Dr Rivière was granted a concession on the Rivière des Galets. In 1833 a chapel was built, which was later replaced by a church. The municipality became a special section of the municipality of Saint-Paul (Réunion) in 1834 . The first motorable road connection to Saint-Denis , La route de la Montagne (mountain road) was built in 1849-1854. In 1860, the La Grande Chaloupe military hospital was built and designated as a quarantine station on the island of Reunion .

In 1872 the population began to demand the establishment of their own municipality, and a petition to this effect was submitted to the regional council in 1881. In 1882 the construction of the coastal railway line Saint-Denis - Saint-Pierre and the seaport of Le Port began . The first steamers docked in the new port of Pointe des Galets in 1886 . The municipality of La Possession was founded in 1890, before the area belonged to the municipality of Saint-Paul. In 1895 part of the parish and the seaport were split off from the Pointe des Galets, where the new Le Port commune was established. The four-lane coastal expressway to Saint-Denis was inaugurated in 1976. In the same year the St. Denis - La Possession railway line was closed.

The majority of the municipality is part of the Réunion National Park , whose core is the Mafate basin . Various hiking trails lead into this valley, they start in the districts of 'Dos d'Âne' and 'Rivière des Galets'.

Another hiking trail, the 'Chemin Crémont', leads from La Possession via La Grande Chaloupe to Saint-Denis .

Furthermore, the former, partially restored quarantine station in La Grande Chaloupe can be visited.

Between La Possession and La Grande Chaloupe there is also the last section of the former coastal railway line, which sometimes still runs for tourists on certain occasions. The route mainly leads through a tunnel.
