Saint-Paul is a French commune in the overseas department of Réunion with 104,519 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).
geography
The municipality is located in the northwest of the island. It borders the municipalities of Cilaos , Le Port , La Possession and Trois-Bassins .
The Gros Morne and Grand Bénare mountains are located in the municipality .
climate
The temperatures in the commune of Saint-Paul range from dry - hot in the coastal areas (center of Saint-Paul, Saint-Gilles-Les-Bains and La-Saline-Les-Bains) to tropical, humid and cool at high altitudes, especially in the districts of Petite-France ( Maïdo ), Guillaume and Bellemène. In the districts on the coast it only rains about 40 days a year.

history
In the parish of Saint-Paul is the bay where the French disembarked on June 29, 1642 as part of the second occupation of the Mascarene Islands . On November 10, 1663, the Saint Charles anchored at Saint-Paul, Réunion became a colony of France and thus the first French settlement in the Indian Ocean .
Saint-Paul is the oldest parish on the island. It was also their main town until 1738.
On September 21, 1809, Saint-Paul was conquered by the British , who, however, withdrew very soon.

Politics and administration
Saint-Paul is the seat of the sub-prefecture and thus the capital of the Arrondissement of Saint-Pauls . The municipality was divided into 5 cantons until 2015 ( Saint-Paul-1 , Saint-Paul-2 , Saint-Paul-3 , Saint-Paul-4 , Saint-Paul-5 ), these cantons became three cantons in 2015 ( Canton Saint-Paul-1, Canton Saint-Paul-2, Canton Saint-Paul-3) newly cropped.
