Sainte-Rose is a French commune in the overseas department of Réunion with 6,418 inhabitants (January 1, 2017).

geography

The municipality of Sainte-Rose, which covers 166.7 km², is located in the east of the island of Réunion. The northern municipal boundary marks the river Rivière de l'Est , in the south the border runs from the chimney of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano to the Grand Brûlé , the coastal section of the volcanic slope.

The neighboring municipalities of Sainte-Rose are La Plaine-des-Palmistes , Saint-Benoît , Saint-Joseph , Saint-Philippe and Le Tampon .

history

  • On August 16, 1809, the British landed under the command of Captain Robert Corbet at Sainte-Rose on Réunion . They were beaten here by the Saint-Benoît National Guard on August 25th.
  • In January 1901 the British steamer “Kaisairi” ran aground near Sainte-Rose. 23 of the 75-strong team died.
  • In April 1977 the district of Piton Sainte-Rose was partially buried by a lava flow during an eruption of the neighboring volcano Piton de la Fournaise , the church, formerly Sainte-Rose, has since been called Notre-Dame-des-Laves .
