Le Tampon is a French commune in the overseas department of Réunion with 78,629 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).
geography
Le Tampon is located about south of the center of the island and is one of the few communities that have no access to the coast. It lies on the slope of the central plain "Pleine des Cafres" down to the coast at Saint-Pierre . The settlement structure is rather scattered, especially along the connecting road to the north of Réunion. Numerous districts are simply named with ordinal numbers, according to their kilometer distance from Saint-Pierre, such as Le Onzième ("the eleventh") or Le Vingt-Troisième ("the twenty-third").
history
The south of Réunion has been populated since the 18th century. Initially, mainly the perfume plants vetiver and ylang-ylang were grown on the slopes . As an independent municipality, Le Tampon was spun off from the city of Saint-Pierre in 1925 .
Culture and sights
With the Maison du Volcan (House of the Volcano) is one of the most visited museums on the island, which deals with volcanism in general and especially with the Piton de la Fournaise .
From Le Tampon, the road also leads to the volcano with its hiking trails to the various calderas and craters.
Economy and Infrastructure
The community lives mainly from tourism, especially from visitors to the volcano. In addition, the cultivation of sugar cane and animal husbandry continue to play a role in agriculture .
