history

According to legend, a ship in the fleet of the French East India Company , which was under the command of Mondevergue , discovered a suspicious ship here in 1667 and went into pursuit. This got into distress, whereupon the crew worshiped the Holy Mary and promised to erect a statue in her honor if she was saved. After their rescue, the crew kept their promise and built a place of worship (today: 'Notre Dame de la Salette') from the wreckage of their ship. The village was later named after her. In 1705 there were five families in the area, in 1709 eight, and in 1733 there were already 25 families living in the municipality. In 1748 the area was declared a parish and in 1790 the commune of Sainte-Marie was founded. In 1945 this municipality became an independent canton.

The historical motto of the community is: Mari, caelo, terra, floreat Sancta Maria (German: "above sea, heaven and earth may Saint-Maria bloom")
