Air Austral is a French airline based in Saint-Denis on Réunion and based at Réunion airport .

history

In 1974 the Réunion Air Service was founded by Gérard Ethève in Saint-Denis. After being renamed Air Réunion in 1987 , the airline was finally given its current name Air Austral in 1990 .

Air Austral operated primarily regional flights in the western Indian Ocean until 1990, but has continuously expanded its offer since then. Since 2003 Air Austral has also been offering long-haul flights from Réunion to Paris . In 2005 the route from Réunion via Marseille to Lyon was offered.

In 2009 Air Austral was the first and to date only airline worldwide to order the Airbus A380-800 in a one-class configuration with around 840 seats. However, the orders were canceled in April 2016 without replacement. The second planned Boeing 777-200LR was also not taken over, it went instead to Iraqi Airways in winter 2012 .

With EWA Air , Air Austral operates a subsidiary on Mayotte that offers regional flights from Dzaoudzi Pamandzi Airport .

Air Austral is a member of the Indian Ocean Pass . This is a joint offer from Air Seychelles , Air Mauritius and Air Austral. The three companies have merged their transport networks in the region, enabling passengers to fly to various islands in the Indian Ocean with one flight ticket.

Air Austral received two Boeing 787-8s from the first batch (called “Terrible Teens”) from Boeing at half the list price. The first eleven 787s were built before certification, then retrofitted and are less efficient due to their significantly higher weight. The first 787-8 was delivered to Air Austral on May 26, 2016, and the second on October 28.

Air Austral is currently owned by Sematra at 46.59%, French financial companies with a total of 14.44%, private companies 19.42%, employees of the airline to 12.80% and private individuals to 6.75%.

Destinations

From Réunion and to some extent Mayotte , Air Austral serves several destinations in Africa , South Asia and the Vanilla Islands as well as Paris and Marseille as the only destinations in Europe .

Code sharing

Codeshare agreements exist with Air France , Alitalia , Lufthansa , Luxair , SNCF , Swiss and Thai Airways .
