Air Madagascar is the national airline of Madagascar , based in Antananarivo and based on the Antananarivo airport .

history

Air Madagascar headquarters

The airline was founded on January 1, 1962 as Madair . The flight operations began on October 14 of the same year, but already with the current name Air Madagascar . The founders of the airline were the Malagasy state and Air France . The airline's operations flourished until the 1990s, and a Boeing 747 was also used.

After a crisis that began in 2000, the airline was successfully restructured in 2002 under the leadership of the Lufthansa subsidiary Lufthansa Consulting GmbH and brought back to profitability. The main components of this restructuring were the debt relief of the no longer operational company, a new fleet policy, as well as a complete rebranding in 2004 , during which a new corporate design and a new logo were introduced.

In April 2011 the two Boeing 767-300ERs of Air Madagascar were added to the list of operating bans for the airspace of the European Union due to safety deficiencies . Both machines have since been taken out of service.

The airline is 89.56% owned by the Malagasy state, 6.95% of the shares are privately owned and Air France owns 3.48%.

The state airline is responsible for the maintenance and flight operations of the presidential jet. It is a Boeing 737-300 , a machine that was previously in service with Lauda Air and was then retrofitted with VIP equipment. A change should take place at the end of 2008 and the now deposed President Marc Ravalomanana should fly with a Boeing 737-700 in the future . This plan was one of the reasons behind the government overthrow in 2009 .

On March 19, 2015, Air Madagascar ordered three ATR 72-600 . These are expected to be delivered in 2017. In addition, two ATR 72-600 are leased from Elix Aviation Capital, one of which was delivered on the same day.

Air Madagascar has a large maintenance division at Antananarivo Airport . Maintenance, inspection and repair work for the company's own fleet as well as external work for third parties are carried out here. Air Madagascars aircraft technology is certified according to PART 145 .

In 2017 the outsourcing of all national connections and machines of the types ATR72-500 , ATR72-600 and DHC 6-300 to the wholly owned subsidiary Tsaradia was announced. It started operations in April 2018.

Air Austral has held 49 percent of the shares in Air Madagascar since November 2017 . In February 2018, an extensive restructuring program and realignment for the airline was announced.
