Air Tahiti Nui is a French Polynesian airline based in Papeete and based at Tahiti Airport .
history
Air Tahiti Nui was founded on October 31, 1996 and began operations on November 20, 1998. It was founded by the state with the purpose of attracting more tourists to French Polynesia. Since the company could not prove sufficient experience in the operation of long-haul aircraft , it did not receive any ETOPS approval to start operations . For this reason, Air Tahiti Nui was initially only able to use the Airbus A340-200 with four engines for its route network, which only consists of long-haul transoceanic routes. From 2002 these were replaced by larger A340-300s . Overall, French Polynesia holds a share of 61.7%, other owners are local investors.
On March 2, 2015, Air Tahiti Nui ordered four Boeing 787-9s . Two will be bought directly from Boeing and two will be leased from Air Lease Corporation . On March 14, the French airline Air Tahiti Nui flew the longest domestic passenger flight of all time with 9,765 miles from Tahiti to Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport, according to CNN.
Destinations
Air Tahiti Nui serves cities in East and Australasia , North America and Paris as the only destination in Europe from Tahiti Airport .
There are also codeshare agreements with Air New Zealand , Aircalin , American Airlines , Japan Airlines , Korean Air , Qantas Airways and SNCF .
On March 16, 2020, Air Tahiti Nui flew the longest domestic flight to date with 15,715 kilometers (8,485 nautical miles ) from Papeete to Paris as a result of the corona pandemic . However, on May 15, 2020, the French Bee , also as a result of the corona pandemic, exceeded this by 414 kilometers (223 nautical miles) with a total of 16,129 kilometers (8,709 nautical miles).
