history

The company was founded in 1961 by Michel Ziegler, an experienced mountain pilot, following the example of the Swiss Hermann Geiger , which was first based near Chambéry and later on the mountain airfield of Courchevel and thus probably the highest company headquarters in Europe (as of 2016 m. above sea level).

In cooperation with Hermann Geiger, who trained the first pilots of the new company, Air Alpes contributed to further developing the system of landing sites in the high mountains. Since 1963, new high mountain airfields have been built in La Plagne , Megève , L'Alpe d'Huez and other winter sports resorts. Air Alpes operated flight connections in Corsica in the summer .

Around 1970 the company got into the rapidly increasing regional air traffic between several French regions and offered, among other things, direct flights between the airport of Chambéry and Paris , 1973 between Grenoble and Metz and later also from Lyon and Geneva to Méribel . It offered Alpine sightseeing flights and flights with external landings from the airfields in the departments of Haute-Savoie , Savoie and Isère . Landing with powered aircraft in the high mountains outside airfields was prohibited by the French law of 9 January 1985 on the protection of mountain regions.

By 1973, Air Alpes provided the French public broadcaster ORTF with an airborne relay station for live broadcasts during the mountain stages of the Tour de France cycle race . In the 1970s, the company carried out flights on behalf of wine-growing organizations to prevent hail damage in the regions of Burgundy , Côtes du Rhône , Savoy and Champagne , for various authorities flights to trigger rain on the island of Tenerife and early warning flights due to the risk of forest fires in Corsica and in the department Hérault through.

In 1971 Air Alpes undertook a training program for the Nepalese airline Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation to train its pilots in mountain flight service and in field landings on high-altitude improvised runways.

In 1972 the companies Aersud and Air Alpes founded the Italian subsidiary AVI ALPI in Trento . That same year, Air Alpes closed the booking system of Air France , and since 1976 she led in partnership with PAN AM (Pan American World Airways) regional flights in France by. In 1981 she joined other regional companies, including Air Alsace , Touraine Air Transport (TAT).
